Had a little gathering tonight and one of my cousin's kids was sick and spent the evening on one of my sofas.  Toward the end of the evening she vomited on the furniture, clear liquid, but still.  I clean that up with my Bissell Pro Heat, but I'm wondering how long the germs live in the ares she was laying, it's where I normally sit.  I'll toss the blankets she was using in the wash. Any suggestions for the upholstery?

Unless The Child Had Smallpox ,MRSA, or Something Like That

Shouldn't worry too much! *LOL*

Gastro-Intestinal bugs don't live long outside the nice warm environmnet of one's gut, and besides it is not like you are going to be licking/eating the upholstery.

If the child had any sort of disease that could be spread by airbone "germs", you and her family would certianly know it by now.

Besides a good steam cleaning, if you want to make sure the area is santitary give a light spray with Lysol afterwards (test an hidden area first to make sure it will not damage fabric and or color).

If you can clean the fabric with your Bissell, then you can put it in the washing machine on the gentle/delicate cycle, and let it air dry. Just wash all the cushion covers together. I've done it and have been very happy with the results. Use a good quality liquid detergent, and cold or tepid water to minimize shrinking. If you have a front loader, use slow spin speed.
Good luck,
Mike

Oh I Don't Know About That

Unless the cushion covers are labled "machine washable", and directions are given for same, there is a real chance of shrinkage or other damage.

Even the wet steam from a domestic steam device won't put as moisture into a textile as immersion into water. Well suppose it could if one kept at it long enough.

No, technically I'm not supposed to use the hot water extraction on the fabric, so washing it is out of the question.  It's marked dry clean only.  It's a 9 piece sectional and only 2 or 3 of the sections get any real use.  Too costly to have it cleaned professionally so I sparingly clean it with the Bissell.
