Haven't Had Any Trouble...

...Since I switched from a DD machine with a plastic outer tub to a 'Tag with a porcelain outer tub. The former plastic-tub machine was stinky no matter what you did - lid up, lid down, bleach, no bleach, it was all the same. The 'Tag always smelled like a lady, lid up (me) or lid down (other half).

My other half resolved the problem with the DD machine by tearing it up while I was in Louisville doing a lecture, so I didn't have to wear myself out pulling the agitator and tub to clean the plastique. At the time, I was not pleased to have to buy new (to me) machines, but on balance, it worked out pretty well.

Open all the time!

I leave the SQ top loaders open all the time except when using, of course! I've been told that drying out the tubs will prevent the mold and mildew plus there's no stink.

On the daily driver, 24 7 365. Why would any of us nut jobs wash with the lid down? Lid remains up to prevent pooling and rusting of the outer tub. Vintage washers that get periodically rotated have their lids up for about 5 days or so after use to make damn sure water isn't pooling and causing future rust problems.

Up until 1999/2000 we never left the lid open, and we were fortunate that our washers never had odor problems. From 2000 to 2004 we would leave the lid open after the last wash of the day only until that load was dried and folded, and leaving it open was not done on a regular basis. From 2004 to present, we always leave the lid up until we go to bed, and then it is closed until the next use.

Have a good one,
James

Always open, except sometimes when it is running. My Grandmother, not only kept the lid down, but slapped those fitted quilted vinyl top washer dryer covers on her machines, like sears used to sell. She had SQ's the dryer had the standing pilot light with the gas service door panel on the top, she always left the back right corner pulled over a tad, where it stayed warm on top. Her machines never rusted. She was always so lucky. alr2903

Always open unless company is coming. My W&D are off the kitchen behind bi-fold doors. You have to look for them to find them. Even with the bi-fold doors closed, the drawer and door can stay open 2-3in. Never any odors here. In past houses where i wasnt able to leave the door wide open, i would still prop it open with a towel.
