Lot of tea here, too. Favorite in the 3qt West Bend Iced Tea Maker is 2 family-size bags of "regular" tea with 3 small Earl Grey. 1 to 1-1/4 cups sugar, add another qt boiling water to make a 1 gal.
 
Grape Kool-Aid

We drank Kool-Aid as kids pretty much year round. What I don't understand with this thread is...flavors? You mean to say Kool-Aid came in different flavors? There must have been a problem with the distributor in Phoenix as my parents only bought grape Kool-Aid. We never got any other flavors, just grape. Nor did we get any other brand of drink. Soda was a luxury item when we got it, usually on vacations. Tang was for breakfast, if it was on sale.

Grape Kool-Aid does make an excellent dye. We had a medium grey carpet in our living room. I don't recall if it was my brother or me that spilled their glass of grape Kool-Aid, but nothing would remove that purple stain from the carpet.

My brother and I begged our mother for Fizzies and she did buy those once. Root beer flavored. We did not like them, didn't taste like root beer to us. It reminded me of a badly flavored Alka Seltzer (got a taste of a glass of that once). Our "punishment" was to finish up the tablets. We were careful what we asked for in the future.

On a happier note, on those vacations to Detroit, we loved getting Vernor's ginger ale. The relatives would stir the bubbles out of it. There was another soda called Rock & Rye, reminded me of a less sweet Dr. Pepper.
 
I grew up on Kool-aid and Tang.

I used to love it. As a kid living in the poorest part of omaha, that was just about all we had. Sometimes we would just take a packet and eat the powder. AHAH.

We froze it in ice trays, put in other drinks like milk and stuff.

Oh those were the days. I drank it so often that I HATE tang nowadays. Koolaid I can stand if its different flavors. But ugh. Cherry, grape, and stuff sure wore out after many years!

I drink Flavor-Aid, Aldi's version, and sometimes Kool-Aid if its on sale. I specifically like that I can make it less sweet, and I usually use Splenda. The Aldi stuff is 10 packets for .89. I use it all, except for whatever reason I'm not fond of lemonade generally, so that gets tossed.

Last year I went to a 70's party and my cocktail contribution was the "Jonestown Revelation" which was just Flavor-aid and vodka and a fruit garnish. Yes I know, its terrible to make fun of that event.

Anyhow, the phrase "I'm not drinking the Kool-aid" is part of many people's lexicon, at least people of a certain age generally know what it means. However, the stuff at Jonestown was actually Flavor-aid, so the commonly-used phrase is not accurate, historically anyway, probably because most people have never heard of Flavor-aid (Indeed, I know of only 1 grocery chain here that reliably carries it).
 
I did drink Kool-Aid as a kid. Now I get Crystal Light or the generic equivalent. Just had a new flavor Target brand (Market Pantry) with dinner: Lime Margarita. It was pretty good!
 
Honestly, I don't know if I'd still like it or not. On some levels, I can almost guarantee not--at least that's what my practical adult side says. I am trying (but not always with perfect success) to avoid processed foods, and sugar.

Practical considerations aside, I can't really comment about the taste--it's been too many years since I had any.

I do recall drinking it when growing up. Somewhat regularly, I think--I think I even recall the pitcher that we used.

My summer "cool drink" is now iced tea, made from scratch. But I haven't had much this summer--the summer hasn't really been warm enough for me to get in the mood.

Thanks for giving my "adult" Flavor-Aid mixed drink a name!  I would have never thought to call it the "Jonestown Revelation", but it makes complete sense to me.  I've been drinking it for years.  I pour 2 shots of vodka in a tall glass and add enough Flavor-Aid to equal 16oz.
 
Whatever You Do...

Do not, do not, DO NOT buy the Aldi's equivalent of Kool-Aid (or their chocolate syrup for that matter). UGH!!! THE TASTE IS HORRIBLE (Spookiness, I don't see how you can tolerate it)!

Kool-Aid was always a favorite drink in our household when I was a kid (especially during the Summer months). I also remember Funny Face drink mix (you guys forgot "Loud Mouth Lime" and Rootin' Tootin" Raspberry". But, the notorious cyclamates scandal came to light and Funny Face changed their formula. Although when I drank it with that ingredient or with saccharin (and now Nutra-Sweet in today's products), those sweeteners always gave me headaches.

Carnation Malted Milk drink and Ovaltine were once in a while treats for us. We usually had chocolate or strawberry Quik. But, does anyone remember Great Shakes? That stuff was good (chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavors), but kinda pricy.

Fast forward to 2011...I generally buy the generic Great Value cherry flavor from Walmart. It doesn't taste all that bad. However, especially now since I'm trying to cut back on sugar and lose weight (20 lbs. so far since May), I really have to watch the amount I use.
 
I did up until a few years ago...

...I ended up with diabetes after major surgery, and the sugar free versions just don't cut it for me.

My personal favorites were Tropical Punch, Lemon Lime, and Orange.
 
How did I miss this thread for so long?

We had Kool-Aid and Fizzies all the time growing up. Tang not so much. My OL was a fan of Mott's A.M., which was kind of an orange/nectarine/apricot blend in a can. There was also Mott's P.M. which had a purple grape base, we didn't have that too often.
I have Kool-Aid all the time in the fridge in reused Snapple bottles. 1 package=4 bottles. I get up every night at 4 ayem (you guys over 50 will know why). Because I snore so bad, I always have cottonmouth. Nothing beats a blast of ice cold Kool-Aid at that hour of the night!

For some reason my ShopRite only carries grape, lemonade, cherry and tropical. I've never seen any other flavor.

In the 50's our Food Fair in the 'hood had a cheaper equivalent called "Cheeri-Aid" that was like three cents a package while K-A was five cents. My OL had plastic molds in the shape of popsicles with plastic sticks that she used to freeze Kool-Aid in the 1948 Westinghouse "Two-Temp". Hard as rocks but a treat nevertheless.

I found a recipe for the frozen Kool-Aid dessert but lost it. I made it a couple of times but I recall it used whole milk, not evaporated.

I always liked "Hawiian Punch" in the big can. I bought some recently and it didn't taste the same. Not even a shot of rum could improve it. Ick.
 
Didn't have it much as a kid, and not now either.
We were more the powdered iced-tea type. Until I got kidney stones and the doc said "NO!"

I think "Hi-C" in a can was around for us more than Kool-Aid!

Then again, as a kid in NYC the water was WONDERFUL to drink!

I completely forgot about Hi-C. My brother was an addict with that and also Gatorade in the can as well. On the occasions when I drank Hi-C, it had to be cherry.
 
My Mom made homemade popsicles also using molds from Tupperware.  We had a 1972 Amana fridge with a fast freeze shelf.
 
We had the Tupperware make-your-own popsicle molds. As we had a dozen orange trees in the backyard, most of the popsicle experiments involved freezing homemade orange juice. Mmmm.

(Mom had a Sunbeam Mixmaster with the juicer attachment)
 
Hey DADoes I have one of those pitchers too! It came from my great grandmother so chances are the one I have is probably from the 60's or whenever they first came out.

I still love and drink Kool-Aid. Perfect drink on a hot summer day!
