With summer on the downhill slide here in north Central WI, I thought I would ask the question.  I've never seen anyone mention Kool-Aid, Flavor-Aid (my preference), or any other similar type of drink mix.  My top 3 flavor favorites are: Tropical Punch, Grape, and Cherry.  I also like to mix & match various flavors occasionally.  When I make a 1 gallon pitcher, I only use 1 1/2 cups of sugar.  Come on guys, it's time to come out of the closet (so to speak). lol

We always had it on hand growing up, and I still do.  It's a reminder of simpler, carefree times.

Good golly. I haven't had any Kool-Aid in probably 50 years or so. I had it a lot as a kid. I just find pre made bottled or canned soft drinks easier to make and have a stronger flavor. I found Kool-Aid to be a little weak in the flavor department.

As a tribute to the original creator of this thread, I'm going to buy a pack of Cherry Kool-Aid and try it this week. Thanks for bringing this up!

I recommend it for oral rehydration for patients with diarrhea or vomiting. You mix it the normal way plus add one teaspoon of Morton Lite Salt, which is roughly half sodium and half potassium. When mixed, it yields the equivalent of 10% Dextrose/Normal Saline/40 meq Potassium chloride---very close to what we'd use IV in the hospital. Served over ice, the sugar masks the salty taste and gives the patient needed calories plus sodium and potassium.

It CANNOT be used for infants and young children, it's too concentrated (that's what Pedialyte is for), but for older kids and adults, it's like 50 cents to make two quarts and way cheaper than Pedilyte. Gatorade is intended to replace electrolytes lost through the skin, but cannot keep up with diarrhea-generated losses.

Funny Face....not politically correct

Some of the original Funny Face flavors, in particular Injun Orange and Chinese Cherry, were changed after being accused of lack of political correctness (they were pretty racist). The substitute character flavors never caught on. Also, when Funny Face was first introduced, the big deal was that it was artificially sweetened and did not use sugar. Within several years, it had competitors, including sugar free versions of Kool-Aid itself.

I don't remember the replacement orange character, but the cherry one was "Choo Choo Cherry" (a locomotive engineer or something) and it never caught on like Chinese Cherry did.

I'm drinking some grape Kool-Aid right now! I love it. Was at my local Kroger last week and they had their brand of drink mix on sale for 20 packets for $1! That's 5 cents each - how could I refuse?? They only had cherry flavor, but I bought 50 cents worth!

I also use a little less sugar, about a cup and a quarter and I don't use a full two quarts of water. I use about a quart and a half. This way when I pour it over ice it still has a good strong flavor. As time goes on, I find I'm drinking fewer carbonated beverages. Kool-Aid is also a good mixer for certain cocktails...just sayin'!

Flavor aide here. We still keep it and use it for grandkids. My favorite is the strawberry when it can be found. I like the sugar free as I am diabetic.
With six kids we would take and make a big 3 gallon cooler full during the summer days for them to drink.

I still buy Kool-Aide quite frequentley.  One of my favorites is the lemonaide, but also like the fruit punch.   I like Kool-aide because you can control the amount of sugar you put in it, or not if you want sugar free.

I buy Country Time in the large cans at Sam's alone with Tang as well.

Kool-Aid, yes. Or the WM pre-sweetened version, depending. I had some Wyler's a few years ago, haven't looked specifically for it in a while.

Love it!...And with kids, you have to have it.......

Grape is best with 2 packs per recipe

the best flavor I love is Black Cherry

the kids love TANG....just like the astronauts....

although theres times when my boss wears a bright red shirt to work.....All I could think of yelling all day is "HEY - Kool Aid!".....not like he's ever gonna catch me!....lol

Kool-Aid user, here. I use a packet of the lemon-lime flavor to make an easy frozen key lime pie.

I like snow cones in the summer, so I make about 1-1/2 cups of simple syrup and add 1-1/2 packets of whatever flavor Kool-Aid I'm into that week. Orange, grape, strawberry and pink lemonade are my favorites.

I haven't had any Cool Aide for years. In the '50's my mom bought the flavor called Golden Nectar. I hated that taste and it always seemed to pop up at home. She also took Cool Aide and made some sort of frozen dessert out of it? It may have had milk, Carnation or dried milk in it to give it that creamy taste? That was not a crowd pleaser either. Happy drinking. Gary

I love Kool Aid and Tang! I don't drink carbonated drinks. I have another great use for KoolAid. When I make Jello, I always add an envelope of unsweetened Kool Aid in the same flavor to give the Jello a richer flavor.

Kool Aid, Kool Aid, tastes great
Wish we had some, can't wait!

A 5 cent package makes two full quarts.

The Kool Aid kids in old Japan rode rickshaws everywhere (I can't remember the second line, but the commercial ended:
The Kool Aid kids are off again to visit other lands
Be sure to join them when they do; join them in some Kool Aid too.
Ah the flavor can't be beat.

Mom only made a quart from each envelope and used less sugar so the flavor was richer and we drank less sugar.

There was a flavor that was on the market for a very short time called Fruit Nectar, I think; I'm not sure after 50+ years. It was REALLY sweet and I loved it, but it vanished from the shelves and was not available any more.

The cons:

I agree how Kool Aid is much better than soda (as the commercial portrays) but naturally, there's the measuring the exact amounts of water & sugar (maybe going a little less than the directions call for but enough for taste; remembering how I DIDN'T use 1 cup & it tasted BAD!) & making sure ever crumb of the mix goes in the pitcher, stirring, Stirring STIRRING (and wondering how my arm TURNS BLUE!) then putting in the fridge for a long-enough time for it to get cold!

If I don't need something ready-made, & I can meticulously & neatly make the perfect pitcher, then it's: "OH YEAAAAHHHH!!!!"...

Otherwise, a good bottle of something non-carbonated, sweet, but not sugar-free, goes a long way!

(Orange juice, cranberry juice, grape juice or Sunny-D...!)

I always use KoolAid (cherry and fruit punch flavors) and truly missed "Fizzies" until I found they re-introduced them on line and had ordered them in Cherry and root beer flavors. My sister, brother and I would always sneak the Fizzy packs into the shopping cart or in between groceries in the cart(buggy)to hide them from our dad. Once home and safe,we'd help put the groceries away and hide the evidence.Unfortunately, the color on our tongues was enough evidence to get our asses whipped. We would put the Fizzy tablets on our tongue and let the magic begin. Little did we know that saccarin was the main sweetener and was cancer causing. That was why they had to take Fizzies off the market. We got them at both Food Fair and E.J.Korvette.We also bought Salvo tablets and Final Touch fabric softener there.

Last summer I drank a lot of my local grocer store's brand Flavor-Aid. Very inexpensive. didn't put in as much sugar as called for. My total favorite is Cherry. Strawberry and then they had some sort of apple flavor as well as some sort of tropical/orange flavor. this year I've mostly been drinking water and somme defac iced teas.

Lot of tea here, too. Favorite in the 3qt West Bend Iced Tea Maker is 2 family-size bags of "regular" tea with 3 small Earl Grey. 1 to 1-1/4 cups sugar, add another qt boiling water to make a 1 gal.

Grape Kool-Aid

We drank Kool-Aid as kids pretty much year round. What I don't understand with this thread is...flavors? You mean to say Kool-Aid came in different flavors? There must have been a problem with the distributor in Phoenix as my parents only bought grape Kool-Aid. We never got any other flavors, just grape. Nor did we get any other brand of drink. Soda was a luxury item when we got it, usually on vacations. Tang was for breakfast, if it was on sale.

Grape Kool-Aid does make an excellent dye. We had a medium grey carpet in our living room. I don't recall if it was my brother or me that spilled their glass of grape Kool-Aid, but nothing would remove that purple stain from the carpet.

My brother and I begged our mother for Fizzies and she did buy those once. Root beer flavored. We did not like them, didn't taste like root beer to us. It reminded me of a badly flavored Alka Seltzer (got a taste of a glass of that once). Our "punishment" was to finish up the tablets. We were careful what we asked for in the future.

On a happier note, on those vacations to Detroit, we loved getting Vernor's ginger ale. The relatives would stir the bubbles out of it. There was another soda called Rock & Rye, reminded me of a less sweet Dr. Pepper.

I grew up on Kool-aid and Tang.

I used to love it. As a kid living in the poorest part of omaha, that was just about all we had. Sometimes we would just take a packet and eat the powder. AHAH.

We froze it in ice trays, put in other drinks like milk and stuff.

Oh those were the days. I drank it so often that I HATE tang nowadays. Koolaid I can stand if its different flavors. But ugh. Cherry, grape, and stuff sure wore out after many years!

Yes! and a sick reference...

I drink Flavor-Aid, Aldi's version, and sometimes Kool-Aid if its on sale. I specifically like that I can make it less sweet, and I usually use Splenda. The Aldi stuff is 10 packets for .89. I use it all, except for whatever reason I'm not fond of lemonade generally, so that gets tossed.

Last year I went to a 70's party and my cocktail contribution was the "Jonestown Revelation" which was just Flavor-aid and vodka and a fruit garnish. Yes I know, its terrible to make fun of that event.

Anyhow, the phrase "I'm not drinking the Kool-aid" is part of many people's lexicon, at least people of a certain age generally know what it means. However, the stuff at Jonestown was actually Flavor-aid, so the commonly-used phrase is not accurate, historically anyway, probably because most people have never heard of Flavor-aid (Indeed, I know of only 1 grocery chain here that reliably carries it).

Honestly, I don't know if I'd still like it or not. On some levels, I can almost guarantee not--at least that's what my practical adult side says. I am trying (but not always with perfect success) to avoid processed foods, and sugar.

Practical considerations aside, I can't really comment about the taste--it's been too many years since I had any.

I do recall drinking it when growing up. Somewhat regularly, I think--I think I even recall the pitcher that we used.

My summer "cool drink" is now iced tea, made from scratch. But I haven't had much this summer--the summer hasn't really been warm enough for me to get in the mood.

Spookiness,

Thanks for giving my "adult" Flavor-Aid mixed drink a name!  I would have never thought to call it the "Jonestown Revelation", but it makes complete sense to me.  I've been drinking it for years.  I pour 2 shots of vodka in a tall glass and add enough Flavor-Aid to equal 16oz.

Whatever You Do...

Do not, do not, DO NOT buy the Aldi's equivalent of Kool-Aid (or their chocolate syrup for that matter). UGH!!! THE TASTE IS HORRIBLE (Spookiness, I don't see how you can tolerate it)!

Kool-Aid was always a favorite drink in our household when I was a kid (especially during the Summer months). I also remember Funny Face drink mix (you guys forgot "Loud Mouth Lime" and Rootin' Tootin" Raspberry". But, the notorious cyclamates scandal came to light and Funny Face changed their formula. Although when I drank it with that ingredient or with saccharin (and now Nutra-Sweet in today's products), those sweeteners always gave me headaches.

Carnation Malted Milk drink and Ovaltine were once in a while treats for us. We usually had chocolate or strawberry Quik. But, does anyone remember Great Shakes? That stuff was good (chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavors), but kinda pricy.

Fast forward to 2011...I generally buy the generic Great Value cherry flavor from Walmart. It doesn't taste all that bad. However, especially now since I'm trying to cut back on sugar and lose weight (20 lbs. so far since May), I really have to watch the amount I use.
