I would like to hear from the experts out there about how much STPP to mix into a 134oz box of Tide. The 'slippery' test is a bunch of nonsense when you have a F/L.

I think we need a permanent space on this board to answer this kind of question.

A good ratio, by weight, would be one oz of STPP to two oz. detergent. That works out to 33% STPP by weight. You can also do it by volume - the amounts really are not all that critical.

I premix Sears Ultra Plus HE in this ratio and it works great.

Just an aside...

According to the various industry literature on phosphated detergents that I've read over the years, the industry settled on the 33% phosphate concentration as a level that keeps phosphorus content to a minimum while providing for adequate cleaning. Most dishwasher detergents contain about 8% phosphorus, which works about to about 33% phosphates as well (phosphate molecules weighing a lot more per molecule than phosphorus atoms).

Also, just to refresh the record, STPP functions not only to soften water, but also to break mineral laden dirt from fabrics, and hold it in suspension so it can be rinsed away. No other single chemical does all these three things as well as STPP (or similar complex phosphates).

Amount of STTP needed

Only a teaspoon in a fl home machine is plenty anymore and it is just wasted. I only use 1 oz on a 50 lb load and 2 oz on 100 lb loads, And it is plenty. I dont use more than 2 even on the 150# just not needed

STPP doesn't produce suds on its own.

It does soften water, and soft water suds more readily than hard water, although modern synthetic surfactants are not very affected by hard water in this respect. STPP certainly would help natural soap suds better, though.

By pre-mixing STPP with the detergent, and then using the same amount of the mix that one might use of the unadulterated product, the surfactant concentration will be reduced and sudsing may well be reduced as well.

I work with machine tools that use a water based oil/coolant. The coolant splashes about and my work clothes usually get some. Not soaked, but enough. The coolant also contains an industrial strength foam suppressant and I've noticed that my work clothes typically don't suds up much in the washer, even if I add twice as much detergent-stpp mix as I would for a lightly soiled load. It does give me an excuse to use a high sudsing Mexican detergent for the work duds, though.

STPP and Mechanically Softened Water

Hi...I have a whole house water softener. I was wondering if I would still benefit by adding STPP to the washer?

Your comments will be much appreaciated.

Thanks.

If your laundry is soiled with mineral laden dirt (most dirt is mineral-laden), then, yes, STPP will help even if your house water is already softened.

That because in addition to softening water, STPP:

Binds tightly to dirt and minerals and keeps it in solution so it can be rinsed away. No other single chemical does this as well as STPP, and even modern fancy detergent formulations have a hard time equaling STPP's dirt fighting properties.

FAQ section...hmmm...

You know, we've all answered questions several times on here...in repeating format. But we all know that sometimes we dont' follow a thread to the nTH degree, or perhaps are new members. Perhaps a FAQ section (that's maintained) might not be a bad idea...especially when it comes to how to do laundry, ratios, recipes, etc.

Thoughts?
