where electric is used for most all heating purposes

Launderess, you couldn't be farther from reality.
That might only be partly true in France because electricity is way cheaper than the rest of Europe (but still more expensive than the average in the USA/Canada).

Most of the heating is done via natural gas or tanked gas or oil (being less and less common in new places).

Also France isn't freezing or dismantling any of its reactors, indeed 3 new ones EPR are being built.
As for the Germans, they are making a very stupid mistake and France has already started selling power to them: this means price increases and more foreign dependence, just like in Italy where the average tariff is 50% higher than the EU!
Very sad.

Electric Heating...

OMG if we had to heat our house with electricity we would have to go without and stick on an extra jumper..!
Sorry to go off topic but reading the above made me think about how much we pay for energy that we quite simply cannot do without.
As of the last billing period and remember here we get billed quarterly we are on whats called a BUDGET PLAN .......HAH some bloody budget they have put our payments up to £136 a month equating to £98 electricity and £38 gas every month from now on.. Mind you untill I called them and said NO WAY they wanted £211 per month..... We live in a 3 bed mid terrace house the bathroom is an add on and although its got a radiator its freezing. The heating is set to 19c all the time as it costs a bomb if it goes cold and has to be reheated, I have to use a seperate hot air blower to warm the bathroom before use i am more of a wimp than my other half...lol I also know that heating oil is now way more money than any other form of heating it used to be cheap now its only used where there is no gas supply.
It seems these days the energy companies know full well we cannot manage with out there product so rip us off accordingly.

Ah, how do I understand! Here in Italy, with petrol at almost 1,80 euros per litre and electricity over 0,25 euro/kWh they're getting way too expensive!
For heating alone I pay 2400 euros/year of gas!
