I don't want to damage the porcelain, but there appears to be some hard water deposits or perhaps detergent that has sat too long and embedded into the finish. All purpose cleaner and a good scrub with a microfiber towel didn't seem to work. What is the safest way to remove this? I tried my best to capture it on a photo. Not too noticeable unless the light is right.

When I rub my fingernail over it, I can feel a little texture, but it pretty much seems etched on there, like you said. What is this? I notice it on my other machine as well.

You can try CLR or another cleaner and see if it will disappear. I've successfully used rubbing compound on porcelain (too aggressive for paint) for stains like that. Just start out with light pressure and slowly increase while looking for any wear/damage to the finish.

"I have some of this stuff. Do you think it will work?"

Yep, give it try. Just use 100% cotton, like an old t-shirt/sock, and go at it light slow, then increase pressure.

The 3D compound was unsuccessful in removing the stains. On a positive note it did make things nice and shiny. I guess I have to live with this or do the clear coat method.

Sometimes a mild acid will remove stains
Dilute phosphoric acid is a well known grout cleaner ( naval jelly )

A bleach might work ( not with acids ! )
Try peroxide, dish soap and a base like baking soda

I tried baking soda and peroxide already... no results. I'll have to live with it. What exactly is "etching" just so I know for future reference?

Since it won’t come out no matter what, It’s time for some touch up paint, that’s if your really that concerned about it, it’s up to you. Whirlpool sells Appliance Brush Touchup in lil bottles, available in white as well as bisque for anyone else reading!

It’s a slightly costly bottle on Amazon, but I’m sure you could find it cheaper elsewhere online. After all, if it’s just that spot on the top, you’ll have the rest of the bottle for the future for your other white machines!

I know that this does not answer your question, but the top and lid on this Speed Queen which I recently overhauled had multiple discolorations just like your machine does.

The only resolution was to have both parts powder-coated.
