Probably has gone off, and should be chucked.
Many fabric softeners are mainly mixtures of fats, oils and water, neither of which mix well together, and thus require some sort of emulsifier to bind them together, like salad dressing. After a time the binders can break down, leading the stuff to seperate out and curdle like a bad sauce.
Try shaking the bottle well and see if that helps. You may get the mixture together long enough to use. Also sometimes if FS bottles are kept in a cold area, the fats will congel and clump. Moving the bottles to a warm area, and shaking as above may remedy the matter.
Had a bottle of Ecover FS that seperated into a fat and water layer. Mind you the stuff was over a year old,(don't use FS that often, and even then only in small amounts), but still. Contacted Ecover, and after giving them the code from the bottle, they confirmed a batch had problems, and advised me to chuck it into the bin, with them sending me a coupon for a new bottle.
That being said, also had a bottle of very expensive lavender scented FS that after awhile did the same thing. Shaking before measuring out, allowed one to use much of it, but in the end the bottle was chucked.
