Hi all! I went to one of the vacuum shops in Fort Wayne this afternoon to get a belt for my vintage Westinghouse hand vacuum. The conversation with the owner of the store turned to vintage appliances in a hurry. It turns out that she had bought the whole stock of small appliance parts from Adams Appliance Store when they closed up shop a few years ago.Adams had been in business since 1936. (I had worked at Adams Appliance Store while in high school back in the early 1970's,so of course I new the owners, and knew people that the vacuum shop owner knew)
Anyway,to make a long story not too much longer... The shop owner bought the whole stock of parts, for the vacuum parts only. She got coffee maker baskets, and elements, electric skillet probes, bakelite handles, popcorn popper parts, toaster elements, thermostats and switches, mixer motors, gearbox parts, including new gears, handles, motor brushes, switches, boxes and boxes of brand new beaters, ice cream freezer parts, blender blades, switches, and jars, toaster oven thermostats, and the list goes on and on and on. Altogether there is about a large pickup truck full of brand new vintage small appliance parts. What makes? Everything from Dohrmeyer to Sunbeam,Proctor Silex, and all the rest of the vintage brand name stuff that used to be serviced, rather than thrown out for a cheap Walmart replacement.
So now for the bad news: The store owner,Michelle, does not know what the stuff is,and does NOT want to sell the stock part by part, and does not know what most of the sutff is. She also does not want to give up the space to store the parts any longer, and is busy running her vacuum shop to bother with these parts. However, she really does not want to throw them away. What Michelle would like is for someone to show up at her shop with a large pick up truck, perhaps give her a few bucks for her trouble, and you can take it all! She will even help load the truck.
So if anyone is interested in the WHOLE LOT, Please call Michelle and make arrangements. If you do not want the whole lot, please do not bother her.Thank you! (:

My Little Westinghouse hand vacuum

My older brother found this red bakelite hand vac at an antique store and bought it for me last Summer. I just got around to getting a brush roll belt for it today, and that is how I met Michelle.

Isn't this a real cutie? (:

That's a realy cute vac. They made a wire rolling frame w/handle so that it could be used like an upright vac. I am told that it was sold as a seperate item and they weren't too popular. The stand, that is. I would be happy to send a picture of mine if you would like.

Rich

Hi Rich,
If you have a photo of the wire rolling frame, post it. I would love to see what it looks like. Do you have the hand vac also? Do you know the year these were built?

Thank you,
Rick

Hi Rick,

Neat little gizmo isn't it? I couldn't resit it :-)

I showed it both on and off so that you might recognize it if you should see them separately.

Best,
Rich

Too clever!! That is so "gizmo" I love it! Thanks for sharing. How did you ever find that? Years ago worked in an old time vacuum and small appliance store, and while I saw alot of old vacuums of all types, never saw anything like that.(:

Hi Rich, That is really a clever and cute attachment for the Westinghouse hand vac. I have never seen anything like that. The first vacuum I remember my mom having was an upright Westinghouse designed much like your hand vac. Thanks so much for sharing that with us. Terry

Terry and Rick,

I'm glad that you like it. I guess it verifies my decision to buy it :-) I think I'll print out your comments and put'em up on the fridge so that everyone else knows that I'm not the only crazy...err...tasteful collector <laugh>

I found this vac in an antique shop in Reading, PA during the Renninger's antique show. It was sitting in a corner just covered in dust and it just kept calling me. Ever have that happen?? I wasn't even collecting appliances. I was collecting, with my partner, antique typewriters. but this little vac just had my name on it. Because it had a $65 price tag on it I walked by it several times trying to convince myself to not buy it BUT...well the rest is history. Of course negotiating a better deal was the stipulation for buying. Hell it could have been $1 off and I still would have bought it :-)

I'm new to this group and am enjoying it very much. You all are so friendly and helpful. I hope that I can be of assistance in the future.

Rich

Hey Rick,

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about the years that they were built. I was told that they are from the early thirties but I'm not an expert. Perhaps some one else can tell us the answer.

Perc-O- Prince, ricker:I have seen magazine ads for Westinghouse vacuums and like the machine shown-in 1948 and 1951 issues of American home and Better Homes and Gardens. The upright conversion device for the Westinghouse hand vac is clever.they show it in the ads.your pictures show it much better.Have you tried it as a floor vacuum? How well does it do? It a pretty nice machine.

Rich, Be sure and keep us posted after you have tried this cute little vacuum. It looks to be in amazing shape! Terry

Hi Tolivac & Terry,

I would love to see an ad for this. Would it be possible to post it?

I did try it out when I got it and all I can say is that it is like painting a room with a toothbrush! :-) It has good suction but the small size makes it impractical for anything but the smallest apartment.

Rich

Rich,
I can understand why you would not use that to clean your home because of the small size of the vacuum. I can also understand why you could not resist purchasing it. BTW: My brother paid $35.00 for mine, without the rolling metal frame.

If anyone has an ad for one of these Westinghouse hand vacs please post it,as if would be fun to see.
Thank's,
Rick

Would love to post them but the computer I am using doesn't have a scanner. The ads are cool.they show Westinghouse Uprights,a canister, and the Hand-floor vac like what you have.Would think the machine would be useful for areas where regular uprights or even cansiter power nozzles won't fit.but another downside-the hand vac small bag would fill quickly when used for floor cleaning.Hand vacs were designed more for furniture and upholstry cleaning, and car interiors.
