I'm swimming to New Orleans

Fats lives (lived) on Caffin Ave, a block away from St. Claude. That's in the ninth ward dawlin and dey got da water. Chalmette is supposed to flood AGAIN.

Right now I'm getting rain and some wind gusts, about 20 to 30mph but I'm sure that will increase into the night.

Well, good that Rita's losing steam a little. That's the best we can pray for is weakening.
 
Rita's on the way....

Not too much going on here. It has become overcast, and you can see the clouds building up. The wind is starting to pick up as well. Thanks for the weather update Bob. Currently, they are estimating anywhere from 4-8" of rain for us.

Austin started his first day of work today at the local supermarket. It had been a zoo for the past several days, so his first day will be a trial by fire! I'm sure he will fill you in on the day's stories.

Most, if all, of the evacuees have moved on from Bellville. The roads are clear. Our neighbors have boarded up their vulnerable windows, but we haven't. I don't think it will be as bad as was predicted several days ago when Rita was forecasted to land in Matagorda. Thank God, it will be east of us, but we will certainly receive our share of "fringe" weather.

Jason - You take care up in Louisiana. It looks like y'all will be getting the bad weather as well.

Allen: I thought I recognized that shot of Weiser. Austin went on a field trip there when he was in preschool. Thank heavens he developed an interest in washers and vacuums and not airplanes! LOL

Will be sort of busy tomorrow so may not get a chance to look in until late, maybe before "EastEnders".

Bide well all "down-there". A weakened Rita still is packing quite a huge punch and one must respect such forces of nature.

Just talked with Todd

They are hunkered down. Poor Todd, he went to three stores today to get stuff and each time it was announced the store was closing in 15 minutes. They're prepared. they've lost water, the pumps are out again.
 
Actually it's three buildings adjacent to each other on Post Office St, a few blocks from the Railroad Terminal Building. One of the buildings was the old courthouse. The fire is out now. I am hearing now on the news that power transformers in Houston proper are starting to pop.
Actually up here in Spring, it's pretty quiet. We are susposed to get our first real gust within the next hour or so. So far it's been real hot and muggy, with light and variable winds. I took our dogs out to the field today to play Frisbee with them and when you threw the Frisbee and the winds caught it, it really sailed! They loved it. It's usually not too windy in Houston. So this was a change for them.
Earlier this morning we went out for a drive around to see what we could see. The freeways north that were bumper to bumper yesterday are empty and just filled with trash! Tortilla bags, empty water bottles, Coke cans, even dirty diapers! I guess they won't have to clean this up, the wind will take care of that. The freeways look like 1000 dumpsters exploded on them! When the weather finally clears out, I'll take off again and take more surveliance photos for you all.

I took a few photos today of how people boarded up their homes. This one was the best. Since all the stores didn't have the hurricane clips, this guy rigged the wood on his windows with this "support" system. Can anyone here tell why this is not going to work?
 
Seeing that news about Galveston is just horrible. Lots of historic buildings down there; hope they make it.

The wind is starting to pick up here...will see what happens!
 
Wind getting stronger here. I've heard rumbles a few times through the subwoofer on newscasts, seems like it's coming from outside. But the computer is on one end of the house, away from the living room, and I can hear wind noise coming from outside. Went out on patio briefly. Blowing from the north, through the breezeway between house and garage. Kicking up dirt from the landscaped area, can't look into it.

Was watching BBC News 24 this morning when I woke up, although I'm glad that it has been downgraded to Category 3 (it's the only positive thing we could have hoped for), please all take care out there in the Texas and Louisiana contingent! Will be thinking of you this weekend.

Dodged a bullet in Bellville!

Well folks...I believe we have dodged the big one here! Just some gusty wind and no real rain to speak of. Hurricane Rita made a jog to the east so we were outside the fringes of bad weather.

It is still a little cloudy. It's hard to tell if we are going to get any rain later in the day.

I hope our fellow forum friends in her path fare as well as we have!

I'm concerned about my coworker/buddy who left here for his mom and sister in east TX, ended up right in the continuing path of it. Ugh. Winds should be lessened quite a bit by the time the remnants get to where he is, but if it stalls and rains like hell and he can't get back down here ...

My sister in Houston had a brief power failure. Said a suspect looter was running through the neighborhood during the night and through her back yard with police chasing him, but she wasn't aware of it at the time it was happening.
 
Came and went

We just got our power turned back on here in Opelousas. We had some hurricane force winds all night and day today but things seem to be calming down. Alot of lower Acadiana is flooded and between Port Arthur, TX and Lake Charles, LA is Katrina'd. But I'm ok and the new house is still holding. Only two leaks, one of the windows and the bottom of the back door oozed a little during hurricane force winds. No torn shingles or anything else.

Still safe and washing in cajun country.

Venus, I'm so glad yall are ok and Todd you too. Hopefully when things are brighter the wash-ins can startup again. We can pretty much have our own mini convention between Bellville, TX and Metairie, LA.
