Came and went

We just got our power turned back on here in Opelousas. We had some hurricane force winds all night and day today but things seem to be calming down. Alot of lower Acadiana is flooded and between Port Arthur, TX and Lake Charles, LA is Katrina'd. But I'm ok and the new house is still holding. Only two leaks, one of the windows and the bottom of the back door oozed a little during hurricane force winds. No torn shingles or anything else.

Still safe and washing in cajun country.

Venus, I'm so glad yall are ok and Todd you too. Hopefully when things are brighter the wash-ins can startup again. We can pretty much have our own mini convention between Bellville, TX and Metairie, LA.

Bob, I'm about 220 miles east of Houston. That's how BIG this storm was, we had catagory 1 winds here.

Re: 2x4's to support boards. Those really aren't that safe because if the board kicks out, it and the plywood will go flyin. We installed hurricane clips for Katrina and I'm sure they're still on the houses. They were easy to install. Just cut the pywood about 1/4" smaller than the hole, put 4 clips and push it in (Toggle, behave).

You got it right! Those 2x4's and the plywood will become missles and most certainly the 2x4's will penetrate someones home. I couldn't believe it when I came across that home.
We lost power for two days, and man did it get hot! It was 103F yesterday and fortunately when it got up to about 96 our power came back on. The heat was ok as long as the left over winds from the hurricane hung around, but after it left, the wind was totally still and the heat started rising. It only took an hour to cool the house back down. I really feel for those people who still don't have power!
Out total damage was part of our backyard fence blew down and the power outage. That was all. We were VERY lucky with that one.
My neighbor across the street and I have pledged that this winter we will make up a set of plywood window covers complete with clips for all the windows in our homes. That way if another storm comes, we won't have to go rushing out for those supplies. But this region only gets a storm that would require these covers only every 20 years or so.
BTW, we are now seeing signs in our neighborhood stating "Plywood For Sale, Cheap!"
I am glad that everyone made it ok during Rita. Yes, those hurricane winds can drive water in around even the tightest windows, it just sort of seeps in due to the driving force of the wind! I saw that during Alicia back in 83'

My Maytag Lives On! YES!!!

OMG...whatta mess....whatta trip....WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!

The things I saw and experienced since my departure 6 days ago, would fill a book.
I will spare you all the details.

My 4 hour trip to northeast Texas (Pasadena-Shelbyville, TX) took 16 hours! 2.8 MILLION ppl evacuated. (which also put us right on the dirty side/eye of the storm..)
It's a mess up there, to say the least. Esp. the gasoline situation.

I'm one tired stinky girlie right now, and as I type, the Maytag is washing her loving owner's "evacuee apparell & assessories".

I will appreciate the air-conditioning tonight while I sleep, heck, even a fan blowing 90 degree air is a blessing.
This was one experience I hope I never have to repeat. It was hell....pure hell.

I am thrilled you are at home and getting back to your regularly scheduled life.
