Recently, we've had some members share their grief with us on the passing of loved companions. I have absolutely no issue with this as I feel it helps with healing to seek support! (one of the reasons I really like this site!) But I wanted to share an arrival.

I was done with my route and was backing the rig into the driveway at home. Usually one person will greet me to help carry in things if needed. When I saw the WHOLE family in my mirror waiting for me, I knew something was up! They opened the truck door and said "close your eyes and cradle your hands for your Xmas present!" OK.... Then...

Meet Jenny!

Jenny is.. well.. I call her a 'Black Labranese' as Dad was a Black Lab and Mom was a Great Pyranees. She's two months old and is a rescue from an abusive home. She was one of those 'free to loving home' dogs in a box outside WallMart when the family saw her. The story was that the people giving her away were next door neighbors of the owners and noticed that they were only feeding the adults, not the pups. When they saw one of the kids hitting the pups with a stick, they went over and said that they would find homes for the pups and took them. Sooo, after I spent the money for her first shots, worming, etc, I now have to house train a puppy. My other two Chocolate Labs were Humane Society Alums who were already house trained. A new experience for me but she's a quick learner. I have nicknamed her the 'Snowshoe Hare' as she's still little but has HUGE paws. I think she's going to get BIG. She absolutely loves the snow we have here, which must come from the Great Pyranees side of her.

Question. Does anybody have any experience with a Great Pyranees? I know what to expect from the Lab side but not quite sure about the other...

Jenny is beautiful, and I am so happy to meet her!

I do not have a dog right now, but I have known some Great Pyraneese dogs.

The ones I have known:

Sweet tempered.

Slobbery.

Huge.

It's going to be an adventure.

Wow she's beautiful and my absolute favorite color scheme for a dog.. black and white!!!

I can't say this strong enough because I'm doing it for the first time with our new pup Pip.. GET her used to being in a dog crate now for sleeping and time-outs if you're not already!!!!

Had I known how much simpler it's made having Pip as pup compared to all our other dogs were I'd have done it years ago .

We have 2 Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers that we got used to traveling in a crate. Bernard now sits harnessed into the seatbelt buckle on the back seat, but Gladys travels in a soft crate as it stops them playing when travelling...

...just as important, they both go into their 'house' at night though it is known that these dogs are very much 'den' animals

In the pics, Gladys is the small puppy/has lighter less plush hair...Bernard is the 'posing' puppy when small and has a heavier, denser coat...

She is adorable! I can't stand to see animals mis-treated there is no reason for. If I hadn't taken my cat Remington from my friend he would have given him back to the original owner who mis-treated him and there was no way I could do that to an animal.

What a sweet and precious looking puppy! With innocent looks like that, she's going to be able to swindle away from the typical scolding of being a puppy and getting into trouble, lol.

Just remember to have patience and take her outside every 1.5-2 hours when you're home. After a while, they catch on and get the hang of being house broken. Having a doggy door helps immensely for both the owner and dog.
 
I have met some Lab/Great Pyreneese mixes and they are wonderful dogs. Very calm and confident. The lab mixed in cuts down on the slobbering quite a bit. You can definitely see the lab in your pups face and the Pyreneese in its body.
I work part time with our local shelter and to tell you the truth, I don't particularly like people giving pets as gifts without consulting the person first.
Now that that is out of the way...
This dog will be large, probably 90-120lbs when full grown. It will require brushing every few days and exercise. It will probably be a wild ass dog until it's almost 2 years old.
Obedience training is an absolute must with a dog of this size. The best time to start is at 6 months of age. I personally like the class type of training. You learn as well as the dog.
But for right now, this pup basically just needs to learn its name and what the word NO means. If it is not housebroken, I recommend the crate method. It works pretty fast.
This is the time for bonding, Handle the dog a lot, take it lots of places, let a lot of other people handle it, if you have a dog park nearby take it there so it can socialize with other dogs.
Have you had a dog before? This type of dog is probably for the more experienced dog owner.
 
Drew, I have to agree, she is really a precious little sweetie. I hope you will keep us posted with more pix as she grows into what will apparently be a very big girl!
 
Congratulations, Drew!! Jenny looks like a really sweetheart and I'm sure, will make an excellent companion!

It sounds like you'll have a lot of help from your family caring for her.
