Anytime one purchases a European laundry product being sold on this side of the pond, it is going to cost more than one would expect. Same is true with Miele and it's Persil and own line of products, and any of the other sources for imported laundry products.
Simple matter is costs involved in importing, distribution and currency exchange (amoung other things), have to be recouped. Finally at the end of the day the seller has to make a profit, or else why bother?
Unless one is going to Europe and personally bringing back the stuff, it is still likely less dear to purchase in North America.
People go on about how much less Persil costs in Germany. Well that may be true, but given the current USA to Euro or British Pound exchange rate, which not only affects product price, but shipping as well, again, unless one is bringing the stuff back personally, it just isn't worth it.
Germany in particular has some VERY dear shipping rates, both domestic, inter-EU and internationally. That one wee bottle or packet of Persil that may cost several times it's price in terms of shipping. Things aren't that much better from the rest of the EU or GB.
Part of the problem is most everything shipped internationally goes by air, which means weight plays a huge factor. Don't know if Miele and other importers use air or sea for shipping, but they are in a different league.
