Original show openings

were an animated sequence of Lucy and Desi climbing over a pack of Philp Morris smokes. Found that out on the <special features> of the boxed set of DVDs.
Oh what a great show that was... I loved the Westinghouse appliances featured in the Ricardo's kitchen!

I'll always love Lucy!!!

She was my fortress and an important figure in my life. Anytime I got in trouble or in a bind,I'd say "What would Lucy do???" " How would the "red head" deal with this issue???"Everyone who truly knows me,knows my antics stem from the same ones she past on to me.The day I had my Left temporolobectomy done,April 16th,1989,Lucy died. The entire hospital,as well as the world mourned her death more so than the death of Christ. As I came out of anesthesis after the first surgery,I was real out of it but deliberately looked the oposite way of my surgin's moving hand for my eyes to follow. As he moved left,my eyes went right and vice versa. As they realised I was joking, the interns laughed but my doctor only reacted by saying " Don't do dat!" sounding almost like a Japanese "Lickey Leecaddo"LOL. Dr Uematsu was great and I'll always miss his company. He died a few months after my surgery. The day she died, everywhere, posters, home made Vitameatavegeamin,I love Lucy Hearts, and tons of flowers, cards and letters the son and daughter showed at the following I Love Lucy birthday party in August of '89.

They always have a huge vat full of grapes refreshed daily for those of us who have the nerve to even attempt to get in and start crushing with our feet. Some guys come in drag dressed to the kilt like Lucy and go crazy fighting as they smash. All in fun thow.I like getting drunk on the Vitameatavegeamin drinks they make at the bar."it's so tasty too! Just like candy! Honest Ha ha ha ha!!!!!
I also like the matchmaker episode where Lucy tries to get her girlfriend a date with a women's longeret salesman. She and Ethel wind up going o his hotel room to explane to him Lucy's friend he was supposed to date had chipped a tooth and was still interested in a date with him. He in turn offered Lucy and Ethel nightgowns wholesale. The husbands came also to apologise and as Rickey knocked on the door,Lucy answered it. seeing her neglget, ricky says"Lucy!!You here dressed in that!! You must be out of your mind!!.As he finishes,Ethel comes out in this gaudy outfit. as Fred sees her, he says"Ethel! You there, dressed in that!He must be out of his mind!!!I laughed so hard,I cried.Never will anybody ever top her and her humor, wisdome, love, charity, faith and charm. She was listed as the number one female of 100 that changed many different things for both women and men in the 20th century.

The one and the only LUCY!!

I doubt that there will ever be anyone who will bring the laughter and fun into our lives that she did!!

Well, the story ,in one of the many books I have on Lucy, claims that the way they set up the stage during the taping of "Jobswitching",the way the set the rice overflow was by drilling a hole in the bottom of the pot and stabelizing it on the range. Then, they placed a metal tube under the burner to the underpart of the stage where they had already cooked rice that they put into the tube and used a blower to force the rice up through the pot.It completely ruined the Westinghouse range (they temporarely used a gas Roper until Westinghouse replaced the original one)and had it replaced a few episodes later. All the appliances on the set were on and active. When Desi and William were attempting to do the clean up,Desi was faking the fall and actualy fell w/out even trying. I would love to have met Desi.I bet he would have become a life long friend to anyone who acknowledged his abilities and intelegence. Those two stayed in love forever. If you view the family videos they show during the May and August cellebrations in Jamestown ,New York, you see them together with their children and grandchildren happy as they were back when they were married. When you put two strong minded people like them together, look out!

I remember,

the day that Lucy died. I awake one morning about 7:30 am and go out to the couch and watch the morning news with my Mom. The newscaster says "All of the flags are flying half mast today in Hollywood with the passing of Lucille Ball." I was just stunned. I thought she was supposed to make a full recovery! I held it quite well. About 6pm that evening I went over to my friend Carol's house to listen to her band rehearsal. I got there, and at some point it hit me. I woumd up crouching in her kitchen just crying like a little baby. I remember her hugging me and telling me she reacted much the same with the news that Billie Holiday had died. There is nothing quite like the feeling of the passing of one's icon!

In the 70's we used to go to West St. Beach in Laguna. It fronts a few private residences, one of which was owned by Ball. We never saw her, but frequently ran into her kids on the beach.

i remember when she said in an interview

"back when we did our show you couldn't show a pregnant woman on television. now they show how they got that way"

i remember when her son was dating patty duke and lucy was livid! i would not have wanted to be in patty duke's shoes at that time! lucy was a force of nature.

i remember watching lucy on television every week as religiously as we went to church on sunday morning.

funny, i was just watching clips of her on you tube last nite. never be anyone like her or in her league again in my book!

Does anyone remember the "Lucy loves Lucite" paint commercials?
They usually showed a picture of Lucy and her Beverly Hills mansion.

Personally, I think that America was in love with Lucy Riccardo character not the real Lucille Ball. The real Lucille Ball was a very shrewd business woman with a rather nasty edge to her. You didn't want to endure her wrath.

On a brighter note, the Star Trek series was originally created at Desilu Studios when Lucille Ball was still in charge of it. Could you imagine Lucy visiting the Star Trek set?

WRONG !!!!!!!!

Kenwashesmonday---- First off by 1951 Lucy had not been chours girl for sometime, she was Queen of the B pictures. Also, while it is true Desi was the brains behind Desilu Productions if it had not been for Lucy no one would have ever known what a genius Desi was. When CBS wanted Lucy to take her radio show My Favorite Husband to TV it was LUCY who said fine but ONLY IF DESI PLAYS MY HUSBAND!!!!!!!! The network in turn said no one is going to believe a red headed American girl being married to a Latin Band leader to which Lucy replied What do you mean they won't believe it WE ARE MARRIED!!! Then in 1950 Desi and Lucy formed Desilu Productions (using the name they gave their Chatsworth ranch upon purchase in 1941) to handle the vaudville tour which they had divised to show the network that the public would by them as a couple. The tour was known as the Desi Arnaz Orchestra Featuring Lucille Ball and the public ate up their act which included Lucy as a clown trying to get an audition with Desi's band only to end up acting like a seal and also Desi and Lucy doing a duo to his signature Cuban Pete (She sang "They call me Sally Sweet I'm the Queen of Delancy Street and When I start to dance everything goes chick chickly boom chick chicky boom" at which point she knocks Desi's straw hat off with a bump and grind move). Their act proved so popular in fact that The Cuban Pete/Sally Sweet number ended up in a first season I Love Lucy episode called The Diet. After the tour NBC made overtures to Lucy and Desi about doing the show on NBC with Desi as the husband. CBS not wanting to lose Lucy to another newtork put Desi under contract and gave him a radio give away show to do that was originally called Earn a Vaction (whose host just happen to be Johnny Carson). Since Desi was Cuban they decided they would give way trips to the Carribean Islands and they renamed the show Your Tropical Trip and debuted it on January 21, 1951. On Desi birthday March 3 1951 they shot what in those days was called an audition kinescope, which the Arnazes almost ended up paying for themselves because CBS was still dinking around on minor details of the contract. This show was not seen on TV until 1990 when a copy of the Kinescope of the audtion was found. The only other character in the auditon show was Rickys agent Jerry, Fred an Ethel Mertz had not been created yet,and it also included Lucy's clown bit done in their vaudville act. The audition kinescope was later remade practically verbatim as a first season episode of I love Lucy with Fred taking all of Jerry the Agents lines (Ethel did not appear in this episode).

Whirlcool--- Lucy did not become a hard nose women until she ended up running Desilu after her divorce and buying out of Desi's shares of Desilu. A lot of people (including Lucy herself) have said during the I Love Lucy days that she just went along with what ever Desi said becasue she trusted his business acumen. As for her treatment of guest stars in the early years Barbara Eden, who made an appearence in the second or third to last of the half hour shows said that when she came out on the set for rehersal Lucy asked her if she liked the dress they gave her to wear. Barbara said that it was just fine but that Lucy insisted the jazz it up a bit with some sequens and then proceeded to sew them on Barbara's dress herself, I would hardly call that hard nosed. As for Star Trek---well let me put it this way if it had not been for Lucy there would have not been a Star Trek at all. Lucy was the only executive at Desilu that liked the idea of the show and it was she who backed Gene Roddenbury and helped to get it produced.

Oh dear their I go prattling on again but I am a true Lucy A Holic and seeing as yesterday marks the 50th anniversary of what we know today as the sitcom and the rerun I could not help getting carried away....PAT COFFEY
