I love this era Duet Dryer

Just picked up this gas version, I think it only needs a door switch. The previous owner bought a new belt and drum roller kit which I will also install.
What is better, one of these or a (real Maytag) Neptune?
Really love those Neptune’s as well.

RJ has that model in electric (engineering revision 1 and serial MT35) at one of the rental houses with matching washer (with heater).

I loved my set!!!! I regret getting rid of them but they were a bit too far gone cosmetically for the new house.

WP Duet Dryer Vs MT Neptune Dryers

The WP is better built in many ways and is larger in capacity.

The WP has a better idler pulley, it has four rollers no cheap plastic slides for drum support, WP also has a blower that will stay attached to the motor and a steel blower housing and lint filter duct so it is less of a fire hazard and a metal lint screen.

All that said I still like the 29" wide WP dryers better overall.

The larger diameter drum lets jeans etc fluff out better and leaves less wrinkles.

The air-flow pattern is just better in the 29" dryer, It is almost unheard of to see any serious lint clogging in the lint-filter housing and blower of the 29" machine.

I had this dryer in gas as well, now have a newer version Duet, also gas. Over the years, I've had several 27" WP/KM dryers all gas. It's a very fine dryer for big loads, the combination control units that use temperature and moisture sensing are quite accurate most of the time, but as John points out, the narrower, deep drum tends to roll the load. Larger and bulky items tend to roll into a ball and I get an hour of thumpy tumbling and damp middle at the end.

Dryer balls in this model tend to ride the front of the drum and lazily hang out on top the filter housing. It's better with regular clothing loads, but blankets and like tend to push the balls up front.

Despite the minor gripes, it's a fast and efficient dryer overall and you can't stack a 29" WP.

The one time I dried a blanket in the 27" Calypso-match dryer, it rolled-up and was objectionably-damp in the middle despite running on the designated Bulky cycle. That does not happen in the SmartLoad/AeroSmart.

I had that exact dryer (electric)

From 2005. Lasted 14 yrs with no repairs. And I think it COULD have been repaired but I just ended up getting a regular WP dryer.

Duet dryer

I love the first gen Duets as well. First noticeable thing with these machines is the smaller drum. As mentioned, they do tend to ball things up more and take slightly longer to dry. However, my Duet get MUCH hotter than my softheat Kenmore ever imagined. A good and bad thing. Also, my dryer has the staggered quad baffles, which I like, but certain blankets do end up in a ball.

Man was this thing a mess.
Here is a before pic to start, lots of mini fires going on in here!
All that darkness is a huge blanket of soot laced lint.
One dryer wheel support shaft STAT. The old one has a huge flat spot worn into it, and the roller is toast (see pics).
The replacement motor and fan assembly are already in. Found a nice deal on eBay and grabbed the whole unit for the price of a cheap used motor; the *door switch* was not the problem like I had hoped!
Need to install the new rollers and belt, but that idler pulley in the after cleaning pic is new.[this post was last edited: 3/20/2020-15:37]
