I need a knob for a '50 Frigidaire range

Hey Fellas,

 

Well, long story short, my former roommate committed an 'unforgivable sin' by breaking the knob on my 1950 Frigidaire Electric range, not once, not twice, but THREE times.  Each time, he swore it wouldn't happen again.  Each time it broke again.  The problem is that after being glued so many times, it won't hold together anymore.  Here's a fresh shot from the first time breaking and what it's complete twin looks like.  I do have a set off a higher model Frigidaire, but I'd like to keep the simplicity of the lower model look.  Anybody have a spare?

Until you find a new one, if you could get a metal washer that would fit in the flat center of the dial, You could glue the pieces to it and it would give the structural support to hold the dial together. With the wing you use to turn the knob glued to the metal, it would take almost all of the stress off the aging plastic.

Will, check with Larry at Modern Parts in Ohio. When I visited this past summer I remember seeing TONS of Frigidaire range knobs! He's not cheap, but you've got a good shot at finding the knob you need.

I used your idea, Tom. I glued a washer on the back using Devcon plastic welder, instead of super glue. I recommend the plastic welder, if anyone needs it! I just wish the dark cracks weren't there. Paul, I'll have to try Modern Parts for a spare when I have some extra change. Is that in Cleveland?

Just an idea..

Since this knob keeps breaking, perhaps it is on the burner used most often, (we all tend to have a "favorite" burner, that we use more than the others). If that is the case, switching the damaged knob with it's twin from the less often used burner could add years to it's life.

Would that work on my O&M knobs?

I've got some broken knobs on my O&M, wonder if that would work.

Do the knobs on gas ranges get the same problems as valves on gas ranges, that is, get stiff with lack of lubrication?

No, It's my unfortunate kitchen layout. My kitchen originally had a wall oven and stove top. The previous owners (flippers who owned the house 3 months) took out the wall oven and left a giant hole in the cabinets and tore out the section that contained the stove top. As you can see the stove and fridge are close together... My roommate threw open the fridge door and broke the knob... 3 times... Fool me once shame on you... Fool me twice shame on me... Fool me three times, I take off the knob off and we don't use that burner... Anyways, my roommate is gone now. If anyone has suggestions for padding or additional sources for spare knobs, I'm interested.
