Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Before I got this Cabrio I had a Roper. It worked fine, but I was moving to a new home and wanted all the new things!! I learned my lesson.

Anyways, that Roper couldn't hold a Queen comforter so I have used a laundromat in the recent past. When I said the laundromats smelled like other people's private bits and cheap laundry musk, I wasn't talking about their machines making my stuff stink, I was just talking about the smell of the building in general.

I'd wash the comforter at a laundromat, when done stick it in a garbage bag wet, and dry it at home.

No, I do not have room for two washers. I don't even really like having 2 machines taking up space, I wish the engineers would hurry up and figure out how to make a washer and dryer all-in-one machine.

But things take a while to evolve I guess. It's been 50 years since we landed on the moon and our engineers haven't figured out anything better than rocket propulsion yet. Speaking of, how long ago was it that SpaceX released the news that they have a rocket more powerful than the Saturn V? I need to go read up on that.

washyume: I don't even really like having 2 machines taking up space, I wish the engineers would hurry up and figure out how to make a washer and dryer all-in-one machine.
That was done in the 1950s. All the major manufacturers had them in the 1950s and 1960s, and a couple went into the early 1970s. There are a couple washer/dryer combination machines on the market now but they're of limited capacity.

I disagree absolutely.

Whilst Miele in Europe is about as good as it gets, North American Miele has suffered from various fatal corporate defects through the years.

Worst of all, their decision (in complete contrast to European Miele) to throw away all parts and technical specifications (including repair data) for anything older than 10 years.

Second, their 'it will take three months to get the part' approach (and, yes, dahlinks, twice I brought parts over from Germany for fellow members after they were told just that and in both cases I picked the parts up at Miele's Showroom on Sonnenstr. in Munich).

Finally, As many UK members all-too-frequently point out here, the UK market is totally and completely removed from both Europe as well as the rest of the world. Toploaders in the UK may be worthless, but elsewhere, this does not hold.

The thing is, a top loader won't wash a comforter well. The HE washplate types may use loads of water, but they won't roll over large bulky items, so they don't really get washed. Traditional agitator machines are similarly stumped by big bulky items, and are increasingly rare. FL is the way forward, but SQ machines have significant reliability issues (despite the propaganda) and lack heaters. I'm dismayed to hear Miele USA discarded all parts for over-10-year-old machines - how did they get away with that when it's so contrary to the policy of the parent company?

The only alternative, then, would appear to be buying a FL from either BSH or LG, Electrolux or Whirlpool...

A risky move

This GE contains an agitator and a 4.5CF capacity. Seems to have good rollover...but again i'm not sure how this thing would perform with a large item.

GE

That corkscrew looks like it's doing absolutely nothing. And the machine sounds like it's on its last legs instead of brand new.

I'm actually impressed with this machine.
Not sure about it's longevity though....in the land of Haier/GE.

That corkscrew isn't doing anything cuz it's a rather small load with arguably too much water.

Not sure if Bellelo's is near you or would deliver to you.

And a question for those on this thread what is there a commercial residential Maytag front load model? TL is MVWP575GW, Dryer is MGDP575GW/ MEDP575GW but nothing between consumer style FL and MHN33PNCGW/ MHN33PRCWW?

Comforters and my Fisher & Paykel

I have my down king-size duvet washed every few of years by the company that makes them ( Canada, and Dania Down). And it is about CAD 36.00. I have several covers, light cotton and bright colours for summer, heavy for winter, easy to launder.

I actually logged on again to add to my posts from late 2017 but cannot find them anywhere and this maybe useful to the OP.

I too have a narrow entrance to the laundry area and really no room in there for a front loader anyhow.

The terrific people here led me gently to a Fisher and Paykel 3927, their traditional agitator top loader. and I wanted to come back to say I am in LOVE with this machine. Thank you everyone!

And I see above comments about the noise from top-loading machines. This one is quiet, it is quick, it is efficient, it is even pretty. And it came with a promotion of a 5 year warranty.

All I wanted was a machine that worked. Now I am so enthusiastic I drag friends in to admire it.

Happily sudsing, The Sudsy Senior

SudsySenior--I think your posts last year are probably these:

http://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?73271

You should be able to post to that thread again.

Your posts probably vanished because the index page only shows what has been most recently active. If I recall right, there is only one index page per subforum for regular (non-upgraded) users like you. But everything does get archived.

Glad to hear you are happy with your washer!

Links...

Thank you Lord Kenmore, for the link. I went through the current page and quite a few archives pages, using both the search box and Control F, with no luck. I have now saved the link.

And thanks, StrickleyboJack, yes, I had been keen to have a Speed Queen but now rather relieved; feel very lucky to have found this site.

Hello, all you beautiful washing machine gurus!

I am the poster who created this thread a year ago, washyume.

I never bought a new washing machine. I just didn't feel like spending the money, but now I'm ready for some retail therapy and my machine is throwing a LF code. I don't even care what it means, because I'm finally ready to get a new washer!

Are the LG WM3770 and MVWP575GW still viable options? Anything better?

Better is a loaded term. I would take a Miele anything over an LG, Maytag or Whirlpool. It would most likely not fall in your price range nor in your size requirement. We love ours and probably do more laundry than most (13 people in the house). We shove queen size sheets, comforter, etc in the W1 and they all come out clean. Once they are wet they don’t take up so much room.

But..... Theybare probably the most expensive washer on the market.

Have you looked at Electrolux? I don’t hear much if anything bad about them. They are full size machines, but probably cost more than all the others except Miele.

Speed Queen if you want a top loader. Would never own a top loader ever again, but that’s a personal preference.

I'll check out electrolux right now. Is it a good brand in The USA? I ask because earlier in this thread there was some negative talk about Miele in the USA.

Current options...

The Maytag MVWP575GW is still available, but we have also seen quite a few members getting Speed Queen commercial models that still use the old mechanism, the LWN432 that still has the mechanical timer and transmission. It lacks a water level switch, but so does the Maytag.

Electrolux is a decent brand in the USA. Their top end models has good feature and clean well. They at the top of the pack for build quality with probably only speed Queen and Miele beating them out.

What you read about Miele unthread is not true. We bought parts for our w4840 (drain pump) when it was a 13 year old model. It was in stock and we had it in four days. I bought a thermostat and a moisture sensing carbon brush for the T9802 dryer when it was a 12 year old model. Got the parts again in a few days and they were in stock. Miele guarantees parts a availability for 15 years after a model is discontinued.

If you call Miele directly and provide the part number I have not run into them not being able to get the part. Local service companies are more likely to tell you not available than to actually call Miele and ask.

The current washer and dryer models are sold all over the world and are virtually identical. I would not he worried about parts.

Also, my husband has done some measuring, and he says we can fit, and almost fully open, a front loader on a pedestal. Last year I was leaning TL, but now I'm leaning FL.

I'd still like to be able to wash a king comforter, but I'm also thinking about getting new bedding with a thinner batting than a comforter.

And since I didn't buy one last year, I have even mo money to spend on a new machine! In fact, I will be buying a washer AND its matching dryer.

>> Holy Moly! LG has an all-in-one washer and dryer. Model # WM3997HWA

I think that one was discussed here before. Consider this portion of the review from Consumer Reports before deciding if it meets your needs.

====================================================
Dryer: Scoring Poor overall, this ventless dryer takes around 3 hours to thoroughly dry an 8-pound load of cottons. That means washing and drying a load that size takes over 4 1⁄2 hours. Most dryers we test have moisture sensors, but this one doesn’t. The sensor detects when clothes are dry and shuts off the machine, saving time, energy, and wear and tear on fabrics. This machine is quiet in dryer mode, which is a plus. Note that during drying, most of the condensation is removed via the drain line, but some moisture vents into the room from both the front of the machine and the back panel.

The machine's drying capacity is similar to a compact dryer's, which is why the LG manual states that if you're using the machine to dry laundry, cut a full wash load in half for “effective drying.” Put another way, by both LG and Kenmore, the capacity for washing clothes is twice the capacity for drying: “If you wash a full load, you should remove half the clothes before drying,” says Kenmore’s Peters.

Another user name, I must have used a disposable email.

I bought a FL eletrolux (EFLW317TIW), not the newest model. It works great!!!!

It didn't do a good job at cleaning my king comforter, so I bought new bedding, too. It didn't have any problem washing the 108" x 98" king comforter.

Thanks, y'all!
