I need somwe help on a WP BD!!!!

I came across this WP BD at a junk shop today, it's an imperial 70 around 1980-1981, with the super duty Surgilator.
Now here is the issue with the machine, thy guy that wants to give it to me says it will fill up with water and after that do nothing, i asked him if the motor hums or not, he said it did not, then I asked him if the belt was loose, he said it was not, so my theory is maybe the transmission is shot, or just a bad timer, not sure as i did not have time to look under the machine because of where it was sitting. I really want the machine, after all it's free, but what i want to know is how much work am i going to have to put into it to get the thing to work. Any help would be great thanks

It might be as simple as the lid switch.....

I ALWAYS take the free ones.

When I have the storage space, I have never regretted picking up a free machine.

Always, either I have been able to restore it, someone I know has been able to or the parts have proved useful to someone else.

Unless space is at a premium, I'd go for it.

Or it could be that a wire is just loose and the motor isn't getting any power. It could be a simple fix.

I agree with everyone else - get the machine. This sounds like exactly what you have told me you're looking for.

Here are some areas I would check regarding the motor operation:

1) Check all wiring connections, starting with the timer quick-connect block all the way to the leads on the motor start switch. Something could have come disconnected, just as Robert said. With this being a large capacity machine, motor wiring is very close to the floor and something could have pulled off a wire, even a dolly cart.

2) Check the water level switch, it may not be sending current to the motor. A way to verify that is to check if the machine operates at a neutral portion of a cycle. I always use the final spin.

3) Finally, the timer may be bad. This era of Whirlpool and Kenmores commonly have dead spots in their original timers, especially Mallory versions. Early on, the dead spots are just momentary pauses when the timer advances, but as the problem worsens, a timer will be completely dead in a cycle phase. To be honest, I have not seen very many Whirlpools like this one that didn't have timers issues if the timer was original.

Timers can be found inexpensively on ebay.

IIRC, the lid switch on BD Whirlpools only inhibits spin.
