I Think My WP Fridge is in need of repair

I have a WP side by side...ten yrs old in sept....I went to get ice just now.....and noticed the ice coming out of the dispenser sounded a little ODD and the ice looked somewhat melted......the items in the freezer are thawing....the unit is running, but I'm hearing an intermittent clicking sound....that I've never heard coming from it....I can't tell if the fridge side is working or not. Things feel cold in the fridge.....Regardless I moved as much to the spare small fridge and chest freezer that I could....I'm now waiting to call repair since it's only 7 30 am.........God I dread this!!

That dreaded sound

This happened to me also several months ago.

I have a Whirlpool 20cf sxs that is from 1999. Came with
the house and fits the space. I didn't want to shop for a new
one either.

I pulled it away from the wall and went in. The compressor was
kicking out the start relay. I unplugged it and removed the relay
and shook it. It's not supposed to rattle. Mine sounded like it was
full of rocks. Replaced the relay and it's been running fine since.

Well someone from Woody's Appliance Repair is coming out early afternoon. The lady I spoke to was really nice. I got a good vibe about the company. I H O P E I'm right. At any rate, she said they usually repair things with one service call, at least most of the time she said...

Relay probably bad

Same issue here. My 2005 Kitchenaid defrosted and sound like this ... click...mmmm...click...mmmm
I replaced the start relay and capacitor. Problem all gone.
I took the faulty relay apart. I was surprised to find not just the mechanical relay inside but also a little PWB packed with surface mount transistors, resistors etc on it. That little relay is a bit more sophisticated than one may think.

You should keep a refrigerator/freezer thermometer in the unit. That way you'll have some notice that it is not keeping proper temps.

Fixed!

It WAS the relay!

This repair guy was super nice. He owns his own biz and he's the ONLY one who does the work....

Total cost was $114.00 which is fine with me. Because I so don't want to buy another fridge.

The relay he put on looked to be 5 times the size of the one that was replaced. He said it was a better one (that's all over my head)..He said that sometimes when you replace the relay the compressor won't start. If that's the case, I would need a new fridge. Luckily, the compressor started right up.....everything seems to be cooling fine. He said to watch it for 24 hours or so and if it continues to work it should be fine. I hope so!

Sounds similar to what my sister went through with her Maytag "wide-by-side" recently.  The replacement relay was better than the original, which on Maytags like hers, many had been known to catch fire!

 

I was fairly certain your issue was just a relay.  Keep that repair man's number!  You got a good one!

Most repair companies use a one size fits all for stuff like that its easier to just keep the larger ones that can work with everything.

Yes

I kept his #. He gave me his card...

This gave me a chance to clean out the freezer, which I've always found difficult to clean a freezer because everything is frozen...so my freezer is now spotless......and the ice maker is making ice faster than it was before this repair....
