I thought the VMW washers sounded terrible...then I found this

Do all high efficiency top load washers just sound absolutely atrocious when running? Who the heck could stand listening to the sound of this Samsung top load washer on laundry day? I suppose it wouldn't be too bad if you could close your laundry door, but if your laundry is in your kitchen, or as in my case a closet right in the main part of the house, that agitation sound would grind your nerves so fast!

That settles that. If the time should come that I need a new washer, I'm getting a front loader or I'll do whatever I have to do to get a Speed Queen if I go top load, as they seem to be the only ones left that don't use a reversing motor with that horrible grinding pulse.

Are there any high efficiency top load washers that don't sound like crap? Curious minds want to know.

The newer Speed Queen DR3,5,7 washers are much quieter than my old VMW Maytag in the agitation cycle, less than 43 db. My DR5 is in a mud room adjacent to my kitchen and I can do laundry anytime of the day without being annoyed by the noise.

I KNOW RIGHT!?!? It’s gut wrenching to hear. Those nasty GE ones too are even worse. The struggle it sounds like they have with every load because with most of those wash plate HE machines aren’t using enough water and it’s adding so much stress onto these motors by agitating a full load of fabrics with very little water. We had a cabrio for so long which was not my choice, absolutely awful. It was a total game changer for the laundry in a bad way, couldn’t let the dang thing fill with the lid open, had the stupid lock on it, didn’t have an agitator had a wash plate I absolutely despised it from the first day our grandparents got tricked into buying them after years of having direct drive washers and simple matching dryers. When I moved out I got my own direct drive and it was like my childhood all over again simple easy quick laundry by a machine that doesn’t sound like it’s struggling or having to sense and balance a load, if I had a dollar for everytime that cabrio went out of balance and had to re balance itself I wouldn’t of ever needed a job. Horrendous machine. It spewed oil after 11 years and the matching dryer is still going but it’s had repair after repair after repair.

Your Samsung appears quieter than the VMW "Whirltag" Centennial washer I now have.I had to help it spin--was doing its "shake-SLAM_and try to spin.Stopped it and arranged the laod manually-then it was fine.I would also like a Speed Queen and use the horrible VMW machine for target pratice.

Miserable performance

I can’t believe you can use all that water to wash just five pairs of jeans and you can still see the dirty spots where they’re all roped up and tangled.

The day of the top loading washer is over. I don’t know why anybody would buy one of these machines. What you spend in water is ridiculous and detergent to even try to get things clean.

Reply #4 yes John I agree with you completely. If I needed a new washer I would definitely get a front loader as I don't believe a top loader can be made high efficiency and do very well. My current traditional non-HE TL machine works just fine though and I don't see any reason to junk a perfectly working machine, I will use it until I can't any longer. If I had a large family I might be more concerned about the amount of water/detergent it uses however it's just my wife and I and I only do about three loads a week on average.

But yes, HE TL's suck majorly. I would never buy one. A TL operates like a TL and an FL operates like an FL. You can't really make a hybrid and have it work.

I actually find the noise produced by the Samsung to be less annoying than a VMW. It doesn't have that whiny/grating, "I'm dying a slow death" sound that VMW's have. Not sure which one would last longer in the battle of the plastic fantastic junk war, but the VMW probably has the slight edge there.

washing jeans in a vintage washer

I'm curious

Would jeans like these that are soiled with mud be washed in a LK piano key washer on pre-soak and pre-wash before washing them

Or some similar washer

I'd brush those jeans off a bit first, then my trusty Maytag A606 would make quick work of having them clean and well extracted in a mere 28 minutes.

Substantial mud soiling is a situation for a prewash to flush it.  Whirlpool's classic Super Wash is for such loads.

F&P has a Muddy cycle on some models, which entails a prewash/drain, wash, two agitated rinses, and extra sprays.

A pre wash is a must on loads that dirty. A nice long spray rinse will greatly help, too.

Mr. Rivas washed a similar load in a “classic wash” SQ with a 2nd rinse. Results weren’t pristine, but he washed in cold water.

A wash plate top-loader would be my absolute last choice for a washer, but would take one over, say, having to go to the laundromat.

I thought LGs had a long end-of-cycle signal, but this one is at least three times longer. Yeesh! A few beeps will suffice, thank you.

HE top load washers

HE top load washers are horrible in cleaning and sound in addition to feel. Everything is cheap about them.
