1968 Magnavox top of the line portable stereo...

Did I guess right?
Congratulations, man. It looks sweet....

I know your ebay id and I cheated and looked it up.....

Bob has his ways of finding these things! So...as he always say's,"photos please"

Well I wasn't even close. Can't wait to see it because I have no idea what it looks like in my mind right now. Isn't Magnavox the US name for Philips products as was Norelco? Philips always sold their products as Philips in Canada. Philips Dial-a-Brew, Philishave electric shavers. Their mixers and blenders etc sold in Canada were rebadged Hamilton Beaches.

Well now that that guessing game was ruined, ruined I tell you. lol you can all guess what I got in the mail today. It's semi-vintage, blue & white, had a headlight, has a dial on front, has a handle with hooks to wrap the cord, has 4 wheels, has a handle release pedal, has a bag with a zipper on it.
I'll be posting a pic later.

And the stereo will have a permanent place and fill my laundry room with music.

Now to find some Herb Alpert, 5th Dimension, Beatles, Stones, Byrds, The Cars, Queen, KISS, Bon Jovi, Elvis, to name a few.

Well it ain't ruined. It's a guessing game and Bob guessed right (with some digging around of course).

Pete, it's one of those folding stereos on steroids. It's a dream machine for me other than getting a console. The seller is a collector of Magnavox. Check out that console tv/stereo and the Seeburg Jukebox :-D

Wow it is nice, notably nicer than the little Singer. It looks like it's had little to no use whatsoever. So is everything in your new house going to be as authentic vintage as you can muster?

This looks like an Astro-Sonic console chassis in a portable cabinet. Looks good! I have never seen one like this before.

Magnavox's consumer electronics division was sold to North American Philips sometime in the late 70's...this record player was made by the original Magnavox co. of Fort Wayne, Ind.

That seller looks like the person who has a museum of Magnavox products, he used to post to audiokarma, org but I have not seen anything from him recently.

I am confused!

What really gets me is when sellers include confusing information about their products..

<B>In today's dollars, this unit sold for $1189 new ($215 1968 dollars)<B>

OK, this unit sold for $215.00 new, that was a lot of money back then. But why compare it to today's dollar value? You couldn't spend today's money back then so this thing actually never went for $1189.00, so why make this kind of comparison? IMHO, it makes the seller look stupid.

I have seen a ton of these things by Zenith and even GE, but never a Magnavox. Looks like a very nice unit!

The real thing

This is the real thing. Astro-Sonic console in a small package, Magnificent Magnavox Micro Matic Mechanism Made by Collaro.

I remember one of my aunts having a Maganavox console and watching in awe as the tonearm would reach up to the next record, drop the record and then lower itself onto the record. Well, now I own one :-D

And so begins the journey

Carefully packed, double-boxed, and ready to travel, Maggie is on her way to her new home. Hopefully, she makes her appearance Friday.

Congrats, Jason! I grew up with a Magnavox console stereo (I'm guessing it was probably a '60 or '61). I love the tone arm's little ritual of tapping the next record on the spindle to properly calculate its size before the platter drops and play commences. Magnavox also had the most reliable 45 rpm adapters, too.

WOOHOO!!! Congrats...will look great in the laundry room! Looks nice & solid too and has nice-sized speakers; I bet those vintage records sound awesome on this baby!

Now to find the matching Micromatic console...:)

I'm trying to find The 5th Dimension's Greatest Hits on LP (just like yours) so when I finally do my wash-in (yall are invited) we'll listen to The 5th D, Elvis, The Bee-Gee's, and whatever else I find on the Magnificent Magnavox while the Oasis and hopefully a Belt-drive machine washes.

Maggie in the Big Easy

That's right, she's spending her first night away from home somewhere in a truck in New Orleans. I'll guess, she will make the trip to the Lafayette location tomorrow and Friday afternoon, I'll have a huge box and alot of splainin' to do.

Oh well. It will be fun. I have some LPs thanks to Helen but I wish I had some 45s :-( .

TRULY MAGNIFICENT!

Well, at 9:30pm, the UPS truck finally pulled up and the driver helped me carry and extremely heavy box into the house. I CAREFULLY cut open the box and after pulling out lots of styrofoam, there she was, all mummified like an ebay treasure.

Finally got her unwrapped and plugged her in. One twist of the knob and... MUSIC!!! Loud, crisp, music boomed out of the speakers like a hi-end stereo. AMAZING! How could a stereo that size sound so good.

The next test was the turntable. I picked up Bon Jovi (hehehe) and set it up on the spindle. One twist of the knob and the tonearm gracefully reached up to sense the record, the record dropped and the needle touched down.... ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!!

I have NEVER heard a ceramic cartridge sound so good, not tinny at all, just very sweet sounding. The only flaw in the record player (like many) is the high range of frequencies. Cymbals and the singer's "T"'s and "S"'s do kinda drop out but that's a ceramic cartridge for you. Also, the Bon Jovi record was probably cut with more precision than the records from 1968 so naturally oldies from the 60s-70 will sound perfect. Sean Cassidy and Elvis sounds right at home on the Maggie.

Yes yes yes, pics and a VIDEO coming soon.

Micromatic is right

The tonearm is very light. I picked it up with my hand and it's about as light as a middle of the line modern turntable.
