Electrical pumps
I think with the old SQ design, the last drive motor driven pump design was phased out.
As small electronic motors became cheaper, seperate electric drain pumps took over pretty quickly.
They often allow for more silent operation, better water path design and overall cheaper machine constructions as there had to be fewer considerations made in terms of positioning of pump and motor.
