It's an interesting article. Some of the notable events do not correspond to my own recollections of the history of computers. e.g. I don't think the 1401 was the first "mainframe computer", especially not in 1959. Also there is that "Noble Prize".

The 1401....

Was extrememly popular but certainly not the first (IBM) mainframe. Makes me wonder what the author intended? First "affordable" mainframe? Tough to even call it a mainframe. Hmm.

Interesting

The San Jose Mercury (owned by the same media conglomerate as the Miami Herald) had a 100th anniversary article about IBM too, and with a similarly local slant.

There was a long and passionate struggle to save the pictured vintage 1955 complex from demolition in favor of a Lowe's.  Finally and mysteriously, the building burned.  Case closed, conveniently for Lowe's.

"IBM . . . later went on to invent the first magnetic hard drive in 1956"  All of that happened here:

Fanta.........

was developed in Nazi Germany, and yes, concentration camp slaves made it.

Which is why I never touch it.

There is a recent book called The Coke Machine, and it goes into the sordid details of Fanta.

Just an FYI

My Grandfather just retired after just over 30 years at IBM. And my dad still currently works at IBM. I beleive this September will be 30 years for my dad. I worked there for a year and a half, right after I graduated HS a few years back. I worked there through a temp agency. That was back in Rochester, MN. IBM is the second largest employer in Rochester, MN.

Here is the Wiki link....and anything developed in Germany in 1941 would have to be suspect...

...good to know that Coca-Cola put product sales infront of people at that point in time, and you could argue, that all manufacturers do now...just not to the same extent - Thankfully.

...and please, this isn't put here to inflame discontent over Coca-Cola, IBM or any other manufacturer...just to provide a little reporting 'balance' - companys are not always what they seem.
