Remember awhile back I was dealing with a neighbor and her washing machine that wouldn't wash and her dishwasher that wouldn't clean? Nutty woman down the street.
Today she did something that even shocked the crap out of me!

She's been complaining for awhile that her DW doesn't clean well. I told her if she upgraded detergents from the store house brand gel and used more than a dime sized spot the machine would clean better. Plus she loves to load large pans right in front of the detergent dispenser, blocking it's opening during the cycle. She's too lazy to follow those instructions.

So what does she do? She buys a new dishwasher. OK, what did she get? She said she doesn't know what she bought. Huh? She just called over to Lowe's, talked to a salesman and told him to sell her a machine that will clean her dishes and have it sent and installed at her house. She bought it sight unseen! I had to ask her why she did such a thing and she just said "A dishwasher is a dishwasher, right? They are all the same these days...."

Thought you all would enjoy this one. They are out there buying appliances! [this post was last edited: 6/25/2016-16:06]

I guess I'm not totally surprised. There are many out there who view it all as the same, after all.

And guess who she'll be complaining to shortly about the new dishwasher that doesn't work any better than the old one!

People usually don't care about the appliances in their houses.  they have families to take care of.  As long as it functions reasonably, but not stellarly, they're fine with it.  I think most people still rinse.  As my other half has commented--"aren't you even going to help out the dishwasher some?  You gotta help it out some, that's how I feel."

I got a similar response once over a comment that "It's just a washer!"....whats the big deal....and for him not knowing what makes one better than the other....

you have to explain things in terms they understand.....

I asked him why he has the Mustang GT convertible........as my response to him, "It's just a car!", you could have bought a Yugo!....it will get you from point A to point B.....

once he explained the thrill of power, looks, feel...and the night and day difference of the two....

then his eyes opened and he understood, not all machines are created equal....

then again, like a neutered dog, some will never get it!

I mean... whenever we buy a new appliance we research the hell out of them. We ask people who have owned them if they like them, etc. But to buy something as expensive as a dishwasher sight unseen is something else.

Two years ago this same woman bought a new dryer with the steam option. Had to have it. Nothing else would do. To this day she still hasn't used the steam option in the dryer. Not even one time!

I hate to say it

But if i was that Lowes salesman and she seemed so non plus about buying a dishwasher, I'd just throw the $499 Samsung or a $399 Frigidaire at her and see if she accepted... I mean, it will wash the dishes... ABit unreliably

We got the first report from this old bag about her dishwasher. She said the salesman told her that she can't use powdered or pod type detergents in the machine. She has to use a gel because it has a stainless steel interior. I told her to go by the instruction manual for the machine, not what the salesman told her. She said the installers threw away the owners manual, so she'll stick with her gel.

IMHO these people don't deserve appliances. Lazy or stupid or a little of both?

Karen said in an earlier conversation she had with this woman that she was very proud of her grandchildren. Why? Because "they are out there playing soccer to combat racism."

Try to figure that one out.

When I'm in a charitable mood I look at people like that and say, "I know god is holding you in the palm of his hand because there is NO f**king way you're making it through life on your own."

I swear people are just getting stupider.

The obvious

dumbing down of our nation. I also saw the lack of assertion and intuitiveness.
Even from college graduates who filed bankrupt before age 30.
No common sense or street smarts. More obsessed with texting friends, playing video games, etc. than doing a fair shifts work for a fair shifts pay.
We all started at the bottom somewhere. That should build integrity and resolve in the very least.
Some spoiled of a generation of which some want it all today. Some parents gave it to them as well.
My parents, as I who grew up with minimal luxuries appreciate them once we save to pay for them with our own means.

No Bleach

During my years at THD, I always explained CAREFULLY the downside of using LCB in front-loaders (spider-wheel deterioration). "Oh, I MUST use bleach for my husband's shirts, kids underpants, sheets, etc." To myself I'd say, "See you in three years, doll". Sure enough, "That FL you sold me was a piece of sh*t, I need a new one". Then buys another brand and (probably) continues with the LCB. Go with God.

Friends just bought a house two blocks away. It came with an (ugh) Kenmore FL pair. I immediately gave them "the drill". " Oh, I need bleach for t-shirts, towels, dress shirts, et. al.) I took over a jar of STPP and explained it's use. "Charlie, that stuff is amazing! Even with bleach my whites never came out like that".

Booyah.

Believe it or not this woman is in her late 60's (I suspect even early 70's) has a degree from Radcliffe, and can discuss just about any kind of philosophy under the sun intelligently. But when it comes to common sense, she has none. Not a stitch of it.

You may be on to something. One thing both of us has noticed with this couple is that everything they learn and do is half assed. For example. They have had McIntosh computers for the past 10 years. They know how to send an e-mail. But they can't quite figure out how to edit an e-mail. Cut and paste is one of the mysteries of the universe. They'll call their daughter up in New York for help with that. Each and every time. The woman has a great Kitchenaid wall oven with convection cooking. She can't use it. Why? The doctor told her that convection cooking will stop her pacemaker and kill her. But she stands in front of her microwave all the time. And of course she never locks the cars on her doors because her daughter told her that if she ever has a wreck she'll be trapped inside and will burn to death. And this is just the tip of the iceberg!

I know most people have a quirk or two on occasion, but in this case we've got the whole shebang! Karen asked me once "Have you seen all those bottles of Xanax on her kitchen counter? I think someone may need some help."

Smart vs intelligent

I have a brother who aced his A-levels, is one of the best chemistry students at our university and is friends with people of "world fame" (in science terms, that is).
However, he managed to burn a burger so badly, it left an imprint in the pan.

On LCB in FLs: I use it during boilwashes and not one of our washers had a spider problem.

So what's the final word on liquid chlorine bleach in front loaders? Bad for the spider or not? I thought that fabric softener was bad for it too, which I never use anyway. But I do bleach my white stuff. I add it manually toward the end of the wash thru the dispenser tray where it just runs right into the tub. I dilute it with water first though, so not to make holes in anything by full strength bleach hitting the clothes. Is that bad? I would like my expensive machine to last me a while.
