If you lived in an Eichler home, why would you want it blurred out of Google Street View?

Some people do this kind of thing just because it's there. Others may think that they are warding off some kind of juju by doing it.

And I'm willing to bet if you asked these people why, some of the responses would just blow you away!

My Opinion....

....Is that someone is unhappy about the co-opting of their private property for Google's commercial purposes. That is a point of view I find entirely reasonable. It's their house, they should get to say whether the whole world gets to gawk on it from their computers or not.

The truth is that we all once had a great deal more privacy than we do now. Due to our Web surfing, our cell calls, our online shopping and Google's relentless commercialization of Every. Single. Thing. It. Can. Get. Its. Hands. On., Corporate America knows a tremendous amount about each and every one of us - information that used to be completely private.

If someone chooses to fight back a little bit, I can't say that I blame them.

I totally agree with you Sandy... it's scary how anything and everything is available on the internet now... And where does it end? Now, google is doing street view passes of your home... will they be making drone views of your private back yard and decks available next? Let alone your every internet query? And your every movement and time tracked by your "smart" phone?

Don't blame those guys-if they don't want computer watchers to see their home-should be THE OWNERS choice to blot it out.See homes similar to this in 1950' Better Homes&Gardens magazines and even Popular Mechanics from that time. Also seen similar homes in Florida.Suppose this house design would be good in areas with warm and mild climates.

It's their house, they should get to say whether the whole world gets to gawk on it from their computers or not.

I don't know, if someone doesn't want people looking at their house simply because it is THEIR house I think they have some problems that may need to be looked at by a psychiatrist. That is full blown selfishness syndrome. They are also the kind of people who may stick their tongues out at you if you are looking at their house from inside your car as you are passing by. Very childish mentality.

If they want to keep their house all to their little ole' selves they should put up a brick wall around it so NOBODY can ever see it, except themselves. Geesh!

I thought I was clear here, but evidently I wasn't.

What I think the owners may be protesting here is the idea that Google thinks it's perfectly okay to take photographs of their house for commercial purposes without so much as a by-your-leave - NOT the idea that others might look at their house.

There is a huge difference in those two points of view.

With Google owning a satellite imaging company, the pics of your backyards are already there...

That being said, I'd be lost without google's efforts with street view etc...

Up here, in the Bakken oil boom, you wouldn't believe the changes... New roads every other day, new buildings etc.... With google's mapping car driving around, google maps keeps current with roads that aren't listed, or aren't even legal roads yet.. as long as they have a common nickname.

As far as the street view goes, in my opinion, its no different than people walking down the road looking in... Generally speaking, the mass public doesn't want to know what Jim Bob has going on in his yard.

Ok, so I assume somebody is making money off the image of this house. Just exactly WHO is making money off of the image of that particular house? I don't think anyone is. I look at it like reference materials. It's there for people who need it.

Now that I think about it they just may be blanking it out from Google just because Google gives them that option. It could be as simple as that. Now if Google charged them a fee for removing the house, I wonder how many homes would reappear? Say the fee is $5.00 per year.

Well I agree with Sandy...

in fact the default should be that a house NOT be shown unless agreed to by the owner in advance... IMO. It's all just one more step towards Big Brother.

When drones start flying over my place in Vermont they will be dodging goose-load 12 ga. shot.

AFAIC

it is very different than someone walking or driving down the actual road... anyone in the entire world can see your home with just a few keystrokes, and that is a major invasion of privacy, as is publicly accessible high resolution satellite views of your private back yard, again... IMO.

Another Viewpoint

Not to necessarily argue with anything previously stated, but here's another way to look at this; as a data base/resource material, is it not similar to the phone books of the old days?  Where would we have been without the White Pages?  And if a telephone customer preferred that his/her number be omitted, it could be for a charge, similar to a statement above.

As a street view, I don't see it as an invasion of privacy.  A backyard view would be 'horse of a different color.'

Lawrence,

What you are saying is exactly what I was saying. For a fee you could have your property exempted from the images. I then wondered how many people would take that offer up? I imagine not as many as if the exemption was free.

If Google had to get permission from each owner to photograph their house, then the project would be unworkable. The cost would be too high and take too long trying to catch up with each home owner.

From a legal point of view, Google photographs homes from public property and as a "private citizen" has the right to photograph anything they can see from that position. They do not and will not go onto private property to photograph.

Sometimes people do get included in the photographs. The ones that cause trouble are people who are caught entering/leaving a strip club, houses of prostitution, and one can only determine what else. If you are caught in one of these photos, you can have your face blurred.

Now pay attention! Now you too, free of charge can go into Google maps and remove your own home from Google Street View. The directions are in the link.

Now which members here are going to have their houses removed from Google Maps?

Soon drones will require a federal license to operate. I know real estate agents use drone companies to photograph homes for breathtaking photos of the properties they are selling. Now what happens if there is some overlap and one of these drones catches part of your property in those photos? Will you march right down to the realtor's office and demand those photos not be used?

If you want to even take this one step further you could complain to the FAA that you are fearful that someone will take a photograph of your property and you can request that they put a "no fly" area up around your house. Just look up "Federal Aviation Administration General Aviation District Office" and go there in person.

In the meantime if you see someone trying to take a photo of your house, just call the police and tell them that you don't want anybody photographing your house. They'll come out and take care of it for you.
