Over the last two weeks I have sent P&G/Downy three inquires about using the Downy Ball in my new MT HE TL. I have gotten the "Thanks, we'll get back to you in 48 hours" "Do not respond to this" reply. Then two days ago I got a "Hey, how are we doing? Please complete our survey". That was a no brainer.
I very seldom write companies so maybe this is normal, but it's still pissing me off!
p.s. yes I check the spam folder everyday.

Not to sound harsh, but

Are you sure that anyone there knows that when you write Downy Ball you are talking about a dispensing device from the 1960s-1980s and not some sort of fungal infection? I thought modern automatics had FS dispensers. Do you really think the FS manufacturer is responsible for instructing you on how to use something from a previous generation in a new machine which they do not manufacture? Even when the dispenser balls were being offered, the information stated that they were to be used in top loading agitator washers. Check your washer to see if it is a top loading agitator washer with a deep rinse.

Without using the washer's dispenser, you might risk some blue spots on the laundry.

Oh, Tom, Tom, Tom, you silly boy. This ain't my first rodeo! Here the deal, just got new MT HE TL MVWC425BW. I had already downloaded distructions weeks ago.

MT says (both in manual and on-line chat) "this machine is specifically designed to use Downy Ball." (no softener dispenser). So I popped over the PG/Downy and in very clear language it says "NOT FOR USE IN HE TL".

So, who is correct?
And while I have my Shellie on, the chance of me using the Downy Ball is slim, but being ignored by PG is not cutting it. If they don't respond soon Shelldor will be brought forth.

What if they are both right?

Why don't you try it, if it works--then it's ok.

If it doesn't work--don't use it again, or keep using it until it works, or until it doesn't work, or if it works then doesn't work, then there is a probability that it may only work 50% of the time, though not statistically significant does hence prove my hypothesis they are both right.

P.S. How did you get a washing machine into a Rodeo?

I had the same experience when I recently inquired with P&G regarding the new Gain HE detergent formula "for both" HE and traditional machines creating an oversudsing condition in my Affinity FL.

When I received the survey, they got a virtual earful, with select admonishments all in upper case.

I fully understand, it the principal behind the WHOLE idea.....

you paid HOW MUCH for a machine?.....and they toss in this 'Downy Ball' as their softener dispenser do hickey!....WTH?...better yet...WTF? in spades!!!

hell, we all seen lesser versions of somewhat BOL machines with a centrifugal dispenser mounted on the agitator post.....

even GE had an odd dispenser mounted in their HE TL machine.......

what you really feel like doing, is taking that damn ball out, and throwing it at Whirlpool in the first place......this is just an insult in too many ways....

please tell me its not showing on your parts diagram as an item with a part number!...

You should have told us this was a game

There are many different types of HE TL washers. Yours is designed by the manufacturer to use the Downy Ball. Downy thinks that most HE TL machines do not use enough water to make the ball work satisfactorily so they say it is not designed for HE TL machines.

And if P&G decided to scrap the Downy Ball, then what would Maytag suggest?

This is so lame, but it supports my claim that P&G is in bed with a manufacturer, and it would make sense if it was Whirlpool.

So Tom, you seem like a tough enough guy -- just what sort of fabric do you need softened anyway?  ;-)

(Knock knock) Tom!  (Knock knock) Tom!  (Knock knock) Tom!

rp, loved the comment! But I think my MT is a WP. The weird thing is it no longer seems to be PG. When you poke around it shows "(some stupid name)/Proctor and Gamble". And for the record rp, it's not the softness it's the static charge. I get enough of that from the cattle prod and violet wand(!)

Agreed!

Static issues are the only reason I use fabric softener.

I think we can also both agree that there's a time and a (special) place for everything that applies voltage . . .

you may have to just order one and have it sent to you......

if your still having issues finding one....you can have one of my balls......

I only use them to hang from my tree by the little ring....

go to ApplianceZone.com......part number 95732822....3.75

ebay has them too.......

Downy ball

Not to be THAT Internet guy, but the Downy ball went way past the 80s. In fact I never heard of them until at least the 90s. Point is, I bought a couple of them in the early 2000s when we moved to an apartment for our brief stay in New Hampshire. Needed the DBs for the coin ops in the building since my Maytags were in storage.

from what I remember, the Downy Ball was released very early in the 70's, if not exactly 1970(may be even before that)......I remember them coming out, begging Mom to get one, unfortunately it chattered while using it in the filterflo against that pan.....

what did it matter, the washer was located in the kitchen, and I watched every load from start to finish, and was ready to add softener the second the rinse started....
