I think I have tracked down a Westinghouse washer and dryer set! They're the slant-front models and I guess they would be from the early to mid-50's. I don't have a lot of details, but according the original owner they "played music at the end of the cycle". I am now waiting to hear back from the granddaughter of the owner about the price - they are not sure if the machines are still working or not. I'm hoping they will be reasonable - I would still have to truck this from Central Ontario to the Ogden, Quebec. But holy geez! What a great find if this works out! I have always loved the Westinghouse front-loaders!
Next dilemma - when and how do I tell hubby? He's still kinda steamed about the recent GE dryer...

whisper sweet somethings into his ear ; you know, when in one of "those" situations!!! Don't get too excited, either! If they are owned by a Grandmother they might be damn near new. I think about eight years ago, I got the same set. The boot was toast, and the hard rubber "fill flume" into the top 12:30 position of the outer tub was cracked, but the mechanicals all
seemed to be just fine. I have given myself two red "F's"
once a week since I still have them in "cool" storage.
How's the "indicator light" on the turquoise GE drawer dw
coming along, btw? PS I paid $225 for my set; the washer was tweaked to the side of the hookups, but the 'hdia' dryer was
alleged to have been taken out of service at the time of the
estate sale!! Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! frntl

Hey Frntl!
Don't get me going about that GE DW indicator light... I just can't seem to get it going and I am scared to take the timer apart to try and figure out what's wrong. I am guessing the best hope is to try and track down the wiring diagram for it (SU60S1 is the model number I think)...

Peter - I have to admit, hubby knows all too well that I've been after a set of Westys...

I would prefer to go and see them up close but it's like an 8-hour drive... ARGH! I am already thinking I would not spend more than $400 for the set. Is that realistic??

That used to work; since I picked up the Maytag '66 dishwasher, he's started paying attention to me when I gab on about vintage appliances! The smart ones are often just not as much fun...

Thing is, I am not sure about how well they are working. I am still waiting to hear from the owner's granddaughter, but I did learn that they were bought new, used for about 8 years, then moved to the family summer cottage. They were used regular for years until grandma got too frail to go to the cottage regularly. As long as they didn't get frozen in the winter, they could be in reasonably good shape. The '66 Maytag dishwasher I recently picked up came from someone's cottage too - apart from some rusty racks, it seems great!
I think I wound up paying too much for that, though.
Anyways, even if they are not 'mint' these Westys are number one on my dream machine list...
You can be sure I'll be keeping the board up to date as I get more info!!
