Hmmm,

I've had trouble with US customs and powder detergent. Never when mailed to the 'States, though.

Basically, the folks at the US border are under-payed, under-trained and treated like (explitive deleted) when anything goes wrong. They have to decide quickly about literally millions of items which they haven't a clue about (unlike here where the customs official can just call up the product data on the computer). It's understandable that they tend to be aggressive on these things.

I would, however, consider Canada or the UK. First, the UK has everything we have, just sometimes the names are different. Second, postage from the UK is often cheaper than from continental Europe.

Third, UK packaging is often more fun and playful than ours.

Hey Josh just to let you know I have a MYUS address and I get frequently purchase detergents from Amazon and have them shipped here no problem. It does cost a lot but it's my weakness. Every time I go over to the US I alway ship boxes home through the post however the US does not have sea mail anymore so it still is expensive but worth it. I am in Adelaide and was recently in Melbourne and got a Costco membership as I new they had Tide and Downy I was like a pig in s*%t I loaded up the car like it was no ones business the selection is not to big for front loaders better for top loaders, the Kirkland signature range which is Costco's own brand is good to, so if you are in the Melbourne area well worth the visit if not enjoy going wild on Amazon. Also www.britsuperstore.com has a great selection from the UK, I personally don't love UK products as much but they do clean better than US products. US products clean ok but I really love the way they smell our Aussie powders are better than US as we still are lucky to have Phosphates still. But still love my Tide!

Yikes, that's way more than I have at home!!!

I have brought back Persil from Germany, as well as "Via" from Sweden (Unilever's Swedish brand of their UK Persil formula). Recently some friends who visited the UK brought back a box of Persil for me. None of us had any trouble in Customs....the Persil was sold in a tough plastic pouch and was left in that container. The Via box was placed inside a gallon (four liter) size Zip-Lock bag to keep the detergent all together should rough handling damage the box (it didn't). The friends who brought back Persil brought it home in the original box. I think the key may be to leave the detergent in its original packaging; an outer plastic bag to protect it is ok as long as it is transparent.

US residents are allowed to bring back $800 worth of purchases duty free per international visit (there is some restriction about how many days you have to be away, and how many times per year you may do this, but since I go to Europe once a year for 10-14 days, I never come close to the limits). Typically, my purchases are about $600-700, i.e. I come close to the limit but never right up to it. I don't know how much value of merchandise panthera transports to/from Munich/Colorado, and whether larger declarations give him difficulties.

One time I brought home a horse saddle from Germany. In total I had $1400 of purchases with me, at a time when the limit was only $400. They took everything apart looking for more undeclared purchases, which they never found because there weren't any.
