Take your dishes to the store

Take some of your dishes to the store. My 8 year old Kitchenaid cannot keep them standing upright. The older Magic Chef (rebadged GE) did not have that problem.
Next time I am taking some plates to the store BEFORE I decide on a dishwasher.

Paul: Very good advice! I have standard 10-1/2 inch Buffalo China restaurant plates which fit any machine. However, I have a couple of tall stock pots and a huge Rubbermaid 7-gallon container that I usually take along to see if they fit. Wasn't able to do that with the GE, but I'm hoping the lower rack will accommodate them with the upper rack still in its lowest position.

I would get the Maytag hands down

Any particular model Maytag dishwashers on the market to look for?

I think any Maytag with a 3 level wash and a built in heater to heat the water would do. Ours has that SS looking fiberglass tub in it, so far after four years of almost daily use it still looks like new. The racks in ours are nylon so no rusting possibilities and you can change the elevation of the upper rack to fit bulky items below.

Another nice feature if they still have it is the split silverware basket. You can use all or just 1/2 of it. This really allows for a large amount of flexibility in loading. You can have the silverware in the middle of the machine, or along the sides. It cleans the silverware the same way in either position.

Here is a dishwasher similar to what we have, ours is in stainless. A very quiet machine.
