hi i am need need of advice i am moving out of the parents house soon and am needing a washer,,, i have about £50 - £65 to spend and must have at least 800rpm spin any ideas ????

Hi Trey

Welcome to the site. My advise would be to look round charity shops like the British Heart Foundation, they often have lots of washers. They come with a three month Guarantee and are all PAT tested. Also keep an eye out on Ebay and look for ad's in your local paper.

Trey,you could buy a twin tub washer that are under compact/caraven/twin tub washing machine categores on Ebay. Hope this helps.

Trey, Its a shame you dont live in cumbria. I would gladly give you a choice of 3 machines to choose from at the moment. The first being a Hoover performa 1100 washer/dryer or 2 older classics a Hotpoint 9524 or a 9536.

Hey Trey if you can get to a british heart foundation store, they sell washers dishwashers microwave ovens cookers the lot price ranges from £40 to £80 for washers. All the electric items are tested and approved before the store sells them on dishwashers as well I was tempted to buy a rather nifty hotpoint dishwasher but has to stop my self.

I agree with everyone else, go to a BHF store. I've seen many washers all at reasonable prices, and you could probably ask for a discount too! They are all safe due to PAT testing, I would defo go for a machine by them compared to one on eBay that could have god knows what faults. Plenty of decent machines too, I've seen a Creda Simplicity (a WM61 lookalike) for £60, and a Hoover Interact AAA160 for about £150, expect to pay around that range, but you could get a decent machine for £100, and perhaps some extra freezer space while you're at it.

The machines have been pulled from Argos' line-up perhaps as a result of the recall. I remember seeing a video of a worried customer on Youtube months ago, long before the recall with an electrical tester saying that the machines are unsafe. They don't look all that good being composed of plastic entirely.

British Heart Foundation

Unless you're confident and experience with repairing machines I wouldn't recommend buying a machine that hasn't been properly reconditioned.

The machines in places like the British Heart Foundation are often in a right state, even if they look ok you have no way of telling what condition they're in mechanically. They may be electrically safe, but that doesn't mean they're mechanically sound.

Just a spin of the drum in most machines there will show worn bearings or a cracked spider, they usually stink and are black with mold too.

If they vacuums I've bought there are anything to go by, I doubt the large appliances will be much better, all have had knackered bearings or torn hoses or been clogged to death and so on.

Why are you doing me down?, I was trying to help trey. What you didnt know is BHF and all second hand shops stores have to have all electrical items checked. This has to be done by a competant exprienced electrical technician, this now has to be done by law under stringent health and safty laws. Think of the compensation claims if this law wasnt in place, if the machine failed then it does not go on sale. BHF WILL clean the machine and make it presentable for a saleable machine, please dont make me look like a fool. I am far from it. SIMPLE

I have to speak as I find and I have bought machines from BHF to great success I was lucky to find a Miele dishwasher for £80 amd its still going today I got it in 2007 also a Hotpoint washer dryer at the same time is still in daily use ok so that replaced a faulty Bosch 1200 washer/dryer but they were really good when I told them it would not spin they just replaced it. I think they offer good value for money and if you keep looking you can find a real bargain.
This by no means is me taking sides just giving my 2pennyworth.

I'm not trying to put anyone down, apologies if you felt I was.

I am fully aware that the machines are all in working order and that they are all PAT tested, but this does not mean they are in good working order, i.e. a machine may be electrically safe and working, but they will still sell it if it has, for example, worn bearings or the brushes are running low. They may give the machines a bit of a wipe down, but they are not thoroughly cleaned inside and out.

 

All I'm saying is be very careful with buying appliances in places like this, don't get all excited when you see a machine you like and jump for it, check it over VERY carefully and make sure it is in good working order, and be prepared to be let down by it mechanically.

 

They will replace it if it is faulty in the first 3 months or so, but they will replace it with whatever they have in the shop, so you may buy a nice Bosch and find it packs up 2 months later, only to have the swap it for some mouldy skanky Servis or whatever!
