I owned a set of GE top loaders which I bought new in 2004. The GE washer was making strange creaking noises about 6 years after I bought it. My guess is that the struts holding the tub in place needed to be lubricated.
Personally, I thought my GE didn't do a very good job of washing my clothing and had a tendency to rip and tear it as well. Maybe it was due to operator error, but I wasn't impressed with it.
Modern GE's use a mode selector which usually fails a few short years into the operation of the machine. Not to mention they sound like a car alarm going off.
Pierre, don't chintz out and try to save money by buying something crappy. Get your hands on a decent Huebsch top loader or front loader with a decent warranty on it. If you choose anything else, you'll end up regretting it.
Don't buy a machine just for its looks, buy it for its reliability and design.
