I ended up making some additional water level adjustments to my Speed Queen yesterday as I was fixing my dryer vent. I had the camera handy, so I snapped a few pics for those interested. The washer was disconnected from electrical power, of course. :) Enjoy.

Nice!

Dan,

Very nice machine. If I had to get a top loader again, I would definately go with SpeedQueen as well. My mom has my grandfathers old SpeedQueen from 1992 or so, and it's still running strong. She does at least 2 loads a day in it (she washes stuff after every shower LOL).

Danny boy..........

How high did you adjust the water level to, and how many turns of the screw did it take.
Mike

Originally 2.5...but now it's closer to 3.5 or a tad more. I think the screw thread is different on the newer models...others only had to turn there adjustment 1/4 turn (in other posts). My water level is now half way between the top row of straight holes and the bottom row of the diag holes.

Nice, that is exactly where I would like mine to be..gonna do it soon. Right now, mine is just abouve the top row/final row of straight holes..Why did SQ lower the water level so much from the past? Do you think there were other ways to do this. I have a feeling that in 2012 SQ TL will be offering spray rinses in order to meet EPA regs. what do you think?
Mike

SQ did it to keep up with the ever-sillier Energy Star rating. By 2012 the rating should be down to 2 Tbsp. of water allowed per load.

I have a feeling that they will implement the 1/2 rinse fill...that's good for 15 gallons like on their commmercial machines. AT LEAST the consumer can adjust if they are inclined to do so on the current model. That and the lid switch defeat played major into my decision. I mean what's the big deal in buying such a classic machine if you can't watch it...jeez!

Looking at specs, I believe they decreased a whopping 5 gals from previous years. Interestingly, the chart on the underside of the lid still shows to fill clothes to the top vanes of the agitator. If someone did that straight from the factory, the washer would be overloaded without additional water. At least they do have the 'reset'/additional fill function still working for those who don't want to adjust perm.

Jeff....I have a question

How high was the water level on your SQ when you first bought it, and how old is it now? Did you wind up adjusting your water level?
Mike

Mike, we have the AWS76NW (2007 model). The AWS is the series that preceded the current AWN models, but aside from cosmetic changes (different graphic plate and knobs), and factory default water levels, I think it's the exact same washer.

The AWS's have higher default water levels than the AWN's, so we didn't need to adjust ours. On the highest setting the water comes to just to the top row of tub holes.

bungee cord lid switch trick

I wished someone could show me the bungee cord lid switch trick-a picture of the back of the washer with a 30" bungee cord tricking the safety switch on this washer please.

Philip, the metal lever is clearly pictured in post# 413383 above. I added an arrow to Dan's picture, hook one end of the cord around this lever and the other end to the bottom of the washer.

If you don't have a bungee cord you can also wedge something on top of the lever to force it downward, enough to activate the lid switch.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot for the info! I am saving up my money to buy a brand new Speed Queen top loader washer-like this one-the last of the REAL washers, today's plastic junk washers don't stand a chance against these fine machines!
