Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I never knew Insink-erator even made dishwashers until I recently saw one in my aunt's kitchen during the Christmas holidays. How did they work? Her's is the only one I have ever seen. Was Insink-erator only in the DW business for a short time?

Alan, they were sourced by other manufacturers. This particular one was by KitchenAid. Priort to this they were made by Waste King.

Bob:

Thanks for the info. The one my aunt has kinda has a Kitchen-Aid feel to it. It is definitely heavy duty! Does anyone know what years these DW's were made?
I'm always interested in time periods of appliances. I find it interesting from a marketing point of view.

hmmmm, i wonder if he'll still have it for a while when i'm ready to pick up a dishwasher for myself....

When Whirlpool bought KitchenAid, the dishwasher part had to be sold under separate cover, so to speak, because Hobart which was KitchenAid's dishwasher maker.

Emerson Electric bought Hobart. Their kitchen appliance brand name was In-Sink-Erator. So as the machines came off the assembly line, one was KitchenAid and the next one would be labeled In-Sink-Erator.

I have an In-Sink-Erator that is 20 years old and has worked flawlessly for that entire time. Even the front panels can easily be changed to 4 different colors -- white, black, almond -- and I forget the 4th one.

At least that's the way it was all explained to me by my dealer.

I think I remember, and I might not remember this correctly, that even though the machines were similar, KA used the round heater under the lower rack for water heating only and had the standard KA fan & heater unit underneath the tank while the ISE machine used the big round heating element in the sump area of the tank to supply the drying heat. There were other things like upper rack options that were more limited with ISE than KA.

SOLD!

And it is a fabulous machine!

It really is a KA!

Of course, Toggle had a easy time(HAH!) installing this in my ex's place because the prior owner took the easy way out and added a laminate floor on the top the existing floor. This meant that the old DW sat in a "ditch", so, to get the old machine out he had to literally lift the countertop.

Here it is partially installed. We ran it, it is FABOO!

Thanks again Greg M!

InSinkErator

Gary,
I real think think this InSinkErator was a really great deal.
If I was going to get a classic I would go for this one.
Best Of Luck with it

That was the exact same mid-90's Hotpoint that was in our kitchen, before it was replaced by the Bosch in early 2005. What a POS, and NOISY too. Near its demise, it leaked horribly from the drain valve and the lower wash arm refused to turn. How it still cleaned is beyond me. The only thing I did like about it was the flexible loading arrangement.

KA vs. InSinkerator

Does anyone remember a time when you could not buy KA dishwashers? I think something was happening to KA and dealers were only able to sell the Insinkerator version(which looked just like a KA).

Also, I think someone mentioned a while back that there was a certain series KA that was having problems(maybe '86 or '87). Was the problem with the spray under the upper rack?
I remember getting a KA Superba around that time and sending the machine back since my glasses in the upper rack were not coming clean.

I replaced it with that GE2800(electronic version) and that machine cleaned superbly. Everything also was dry even though that machine dries with a heating element and not a fan. I still have a GE 2800 series DW which is an awesome performer.

Guess What?
In Lexington, Mass there is an ISE dishwasher, all pushbutton, with a slide door latch, probably from around the late eighties on the front lawn, with a sign that says "free, it works."
