Does anyone have the Excel? Just put one in yesterday and think something might be wrong so exchanging it. When it is turned on, there is a pause with a hum, and you can tell that the jam sensor kicks in the disposer starts. I ran it for about 2-3 minutes first without water then with to test for leaks. The base got pretty hot. Called insinkerator today and you could tell that the person was reading from the brouchure or something aobut the jam sensor and that if it overheats that the reset buttom would pop out. I have had experience with a Kenmore (insinkerator) disposer before that I think had a problem with the start winding and started smoking and never did throw the thermal switch. I also used their online chat and asked how it is supposed to start up and they quickly gave me some info that said there is about 1/2 sec pause and the sensor kicks in to start it. Does it not use the traditional start winding? I also asked if this information was in the manual or instructions and they said no. DOH!!!! If it is supposed to do this, I would think they would put a sticker on it or say in bold print that this would be normal since regular disposers do not do this. Will see if the next one does the same thing.
Would appreciate any info on how yours starts if anyone has one.
Thanks,
John

Ours

works this way too. There is a momentary pause caused by the anti-jam sensing. Not to worry, it is a good disposer.

Hope this helps.........L.P.

I installed the Evolution Excel about a year ago and mine works this way too. I've never checked it to see if it gets hot when I operate it but I'll check it and let you know.

NEVER,EVER run a disposer UNLESS the water is on too-you can burn up the motor seals. Most disposer owners manuals have this mentioned-also it will VOID the warranty.Since disposer motors are sealed-its normal for them to get hot-however they are an INTERMITTENT duty motor-you should not run it for 2-3 min at a time.yes it will get VERY hot.Disposer motor don't have rotor cooling fans on them-and of course no vent openings.I beleive the ISE "Excell" motor use a solid state stater circuit in place of the traditional centrifical start switch.I have noticed that there is a slight delay when you first turn it on and then it starts turning-and no start switch clicks.Oh yes-one time I put too much waste in mine and it went forward-reverse-several times and the OL breaker kicked it off.Tried again and it was fine.It is a strong disposer and the SS start circuit takes getting used to.Also the SS switch is supposed to reverse the unit each time its turned on to prolong the life of the shredders.

John, I just had the Evolution Excel installed a month ago in my new kitchen. (Pictures to follow soon), and it is really great. I have not had any problems, Grinds up just about anything. They say you can put bones in it, but I am a little reluctant to do this. Mine starts up right away. I always turn the water on first, and leave the water running for a few seconds after I shut the disposer off.

Has anyone out here put it chicken, beef, or spare rib bones in this disposer?

THanks,

Ray

I have the Evolution Excel also...it works exactly the same way. Great disposer...bones, corn cobs, even artichokes are no problem at all for it.

I have had the ISE 777ss 1hp for the last 3 years and I put everything in it. I have noticed the following though:

Beef bones: takes way too long so they go in the trash
Chicken bones: go down all the time with no trouble
Pork bones: spareribs also take forever and sound like it's doing some major damage. The circle bone from ham steak is no problem.
Turkey: after I make stock it all goes down.
Corn cobs: fresh cobs don't grind for some reason, but my disposer takes the frozen ones from Stop and Shop without a prob.
Limes: it takes multiple grindings to kill all of the lime rind.
Onion and potato peels: almost daily.
Coffee filters: daily

I always use tons of water when grinding anything. I'd rather not have any clogs to worry about

Coffee filters: daily

Hi Mike, So you put the coffee grinds with the paper filter and have no problem? I called Insinkerator and they said ist was not a good idea to put paper in it. I figuered that the paper was wet with the grinds and should not be a problem.

So you have been doing this without any problems?

Thanks

Ray

I've been doing the grounds and filter for years through a Badger 5, Sinkmaster 1/3 hp, Kenmore 1/2 hp, and my 777ss. Never ever had a problem. I also huck cig butts down occasionally and they all seem to go down.

Yes-disposers are strong enough to shred the paper-but the paper "pulp' can cause bad clogs further down your drainlines.I can speak from experience.Paper should go into the trash.this also applies to folks who have septic tanks.Paper pulp takes too long to decompose in them-except "potty roll"Large beef bones should not go into any home type disposer.Cooked chicken bones, small cooked pork and beef bones are fine-even good help wash away the "slime" that collects in the shredders of disposers that get only a soft "boneless" diet.with things like citrus-you have to make sure the rinds and other parts are shredded and flushed away-they can emit strong acids and cause corrosion.also large bones can crack or break hoppers on very old disposers-had this happen. What a mess!!So if your disposer is old-again put the large bone peices in the trash.

I cleaned out the fridge this morning and ran the Excel for several minutes and the housing was not even warm. I always run cold water (and lots of it) when I use it so that may make a difference.

I put chicken and turkey bones in it with no problems. I've never done rib or steak bones. Every month I dump the bin from the ice maker in it and run it and also use a disposal cleaner now and then and of course citrus rinds help keep it smelling nice but as stated above, make sure whatever you run through it use plenty of cold water and make sure it's empty before turning it off.
