Probably the worst thing one can do is to alter religion/spirituality to suit the culture and attitudes of the times.
My concept of religion/sprirituality is that one must raise themselves to a higher level/vibration, not change the rules of the "game" to suit themselves.
Marriage is indeed a secular/civil/social custom and was not addressed as a sacrament by Christinity until later in time(centuries, IIRC). It then made its way into that faith "by popular demand".
In the spritual world marriage is the fusion of two dislike adn cometitive energies(like yin and yang)to create a whole being.
Astrologically this is represented by Virgo (female energy) and Scorpio (male energy) fused together by Libra (marriage/balance). Theoretically, then, it is better to take on the opposite gender's energy in onself to be a complete being rather than look for it in others (and therefore by marriage).
Homosexuals, for the most part, can be seen as already having within them/(us) the opposite gender's essence. If this is the case does that make us more spritually advanced? Who knows.
But hear this same-sex marriage will eventually happen; as legally, there is no other alternative. So why not just deal with it now instead of spending millons of dollars to fight what can only be seen as the denial of rights to a large group of people.
If the rules of the game extended equallty to gays, they/we might just end up resembling their/our straight counterparts more closely in all sorts of behaviors.
Remember, every aspect of society and every social and actual istitution FOSTERS M-F couples, and presents huge obstacles to M-M and F-F couples.
Bottom line: What you f--- does not make you superior to me based upon what I f---. They are all pink on the inside and stink really bad.
Gays as a group may never fully see 100% equality or get the love/support/repect/cooperation of others. All we can do this instant is TRULY love ourselves and each-other. God doesn't make junk or garbage. (China nad other manufacturing countries, on the other hand............)

I thought this Daily Kos comment was great. Its premise is that if we're going to base our marriage laws on the Christian Bible, then let's do it in strict accordance with the actual words of that book, not the righties' interpretation of it:
A. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. (Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5)
B. Marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)
C. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. (Deut 22:13-21)
D. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. (Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)
E. Since marriage is for life, neither this Constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9)
F. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother's widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe and be otherwise punished in a manner to be determined by law. (Gen 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10)
G. In lieu of marriage, if there are no acceptable men in your town, it is required that you get your dad drunk and have sex with him (even if he had previously offered you up as a sex toy to men young and old), tag-teaming with any sisters you may have. Of course, this rule applies only if you are female. (Gen 19:31-36)
