Interesting Sears Upright Freezer

I saw this great upright freezer today when I was driving around. It's a Coldspot, but it had what looked like a light on the front. When I plugged it in, it didn't work, but that may just be a bum bulb.

Does anyone know if this really is a light, or just a funky decoration?

Also, it had a few interesting features: For one, there was a badly worn label that seemed to say that it was insulated by cork from the Armstrong floor people (?) and it had a little cord that came out of the door and would plug into a little outlet by the kickplate, as well as a TOGGLESWITCH (caps in honor of the birthday boy) in the door. Is that a heater?

I'm seriously considering going back and buying that freezer, as ours is small, newish and drab. This one is big on glamour, as one would expect from Sears ;-)

Do you have a picture of the whole unit? Perhaps the cord was for the light? ;-)

I wish I had a whole picture, but room just wouldn't allow it - it was ALMOST sheer, but was still just a tad rounded, and had a big fabulous latch handle.

Well that's nothing, yesterday I dropped into the local Habitat for Humanity re-store here and guess what they have... A 50's GE top freezer fridge with the chrome fronted freezer door, the foot pedal for opening the fridge door, the goldish colored swing out shelves, $65. Exterior is white with a few bad spots but the interior looks great. I'd love to take it but haven't got the house yet and don't know what I'd do with it if I had it.

I would love to get it, but there is a feeling among some parties that this would be a huge energy drain. Are these old freezers really that expensive to run? We have cheap electric out here, so I don't think that's a big deal, but I'm not the only decision maker on these sorts of things.

May very well be a Flash defrost, Coldspot did have it at one time, may still. We have a phobia about large amounts of frozen food around here, LOL. I have a strong feeling its a 24/7 energy Guzzler. Might work out nice for you though. best wishes alr2903

Most freeezers have an orange neon or red light on the front, usually in the grill. It stays lighted to let you know that the freezer is connected to power. If a fuse blows or breaker for that circuit trips, the light is out and you are notified of the situation. Most did not warn of a temperature rise inside the freezer. Some old freezers without any kind of self defrosting, Frost Guard, etc, were very well insulated with thick walls, provided ice has not built up in the fiberglass insulation from moisture entering the outer cabinet. You would have to put it on a meter to see how much juice it really consumes. The main trouble with most old freezers is that they weigh a ton because they were heavily built. There are some modern freezers that are very efficient and cheap to run and others that are not. Freezers with a static condenser mounted on the outside of the cabinet shell can be very efficient because the heat is taken far away from the freezer itself. Unfortunately, if used in an unairconditioned area in humid weather, you risk condensation and sometimes rusting of the cabinet.
