Interesting vintage westinghouse dryer at an estate sale

Anyone familiar with the year/model of this one? Looks to be of the "rarer" variety of vintage dryers still out there... It's at an upcoming estate sale by me. Perhaps the matching washer is still down there just pushed out of the way.

Doug - that is a TOL Program Computer Westinghouse dryer - 1959/1960. Very cool and worth checking out. Not the greatest dryer, but certainly the stunning looks make up for it's lacking performance.

I believe the machine next to it would be a black faced, belt drive Kenmore washer.

is shipping a pair east right now. How funny how things turn up in bunches! The washer may still be sitting in that basement - worth checking out.

Ben I've had several and I have never understood why these aren't great performer dryers! They have huge drums so the clothes can loft like the 29 inch WP's! What gives??

Cool Westinghouse Dryer

These were actually great performers, faster than any electric dryer built by WP other than the 50 AMP LKMs and certainly faster than a MT HOH dryer. Now reliability is another issue altogether, LOL.

It's not the same model. This dryer is not a D1000. The D1000 has concealed controls and the cabinet is all nougat gray. This dryer probably offers all that the D1000 offers cyclewise, but it is not a D1000.

Thermostat Eaters

We had a 1956 WH Dryer, and it through thermostats like crazy. On one of the change outs, the repairman said this was a characteristic of WH. I know that over the course of about maybe 13 years, we went through about 4 thermostats! They must have used very light duty Thermos. But we never bought another WH dryer again!

Westinghouse reliability!!!

Im sure different models had different quirks, but in 1952 my Uncle bought my Aunt a Westinghouse dryer, in 1967 it was passed on to us,it finally died about 1980....now I can tell you, when my aunt had it she had two growing boys and a hard working husband, and it ran virtually every day, and my Mother never let it rest much, the heating element burned out a couple of times, but until the last year or so it worked flawlessly, as I remember it dried very well, its demise was because the belt got to the place where it would come off the pulley, my uncle never could get it adjusted so it wouldnt so it went away, we then wore out a GE and a Whirlpool in the next 20 years!!!

Westinghouse laundry appliances and reliability

 I believe you Hans,  Westinghouse washers & dryers were actually among the most reliable laundry appliances until around the mid 1950s, from there they started on a long downward trend while other brands got better. If you look at some of the first CRs reliability surveys in the mid 1950s WH was among the best.
