Baltimore, Hon!
Ldies and Germs, I'd like you to meet Barbara.
This lovely lady was brought to me through the courtesy of Don Jetaction. Who lugged it a block and a half to the UPS store!
Don must have HUGE biceps! I was puffing and snorting just horsing it from the den to the kitchen!
Anyhoo, it does say Amana, so it is a Radarange! She arrived mostly safe and sound in a box formerly used for mussels. When the shipping guy brought it to me he said "Here's yer shellfish!"
Unfortunately, Barbara's glass shelf was a victim of UPS's Tender Loving Care. It was wrapped snugly in lots of bubble wrap, but it was smashed into so many pieces, it was as flexible as a piece of cloth! There's a happy ending coming up. Her lightbulb was also burned out, though that was minor.
Had to get to ol' melon working to see what I could substitute for the glass tray. (The bulb situation was minor. Couldn't find the right microwave bulb so I used a sewing machine bulb. Works jes' fahn.)
Back to the tray. What I did was get one of those heavy plastic cutting boards and, well, cut it. With a sabre saw. Went in slicker'n snail snot, as a friend of mine says. In the back of my mind, though, was a glass tray I saw at the Goodwill a couple of weeks ago. Went there on my way home and it was still there (though not in the place I remembered it.) For three bucks, I took a chance. I could have gotten an "official" replacement, but they wanted 60 bucks for it!
I am WAAYYY too cheap for that!
Imagine my shock and surprise when I slid my Goodwill buy in the oven and it fit like the proverbial glove!
And my little Barbara's a pretty good cook, too. Made some eggplant and spaghetti squash and both came out nice. The top of the cabinet gets pretty hot, though!
The fun part was teaching Mom how to use it. So far, she knows how to get 90 seconds and push Start. That's enough for a cup of tea. I don't think she'll graduate into the multi-stage Cookmatic Level method!
Barbara's nice and shiny, and the door closes with a VERY satisfying chunk. They don't build 'em like that any more.
I also have a Radarange cookbook and instruction manual I got from ebay, but the instructions are for the RR-10 and mine's an RR-9T. Still, I think a lot of the buttons 'n stuff are pretty much the same. (Rick, I haven't forgotten about you, no sir!)
Now I need to find the temperature probe.
Whew. Rambled on long enough. Late and I haven't had nearly enough snacks today.

WOW !!YOU GO VEG!!

I am SO happy for you! I know how much you wanted one of those. :)

Rick

Yeah for Barbara!!! I am so glad you like her Veg, no they don't make them like that anymore, that's for sure. Because of a very busy rush hour and no where to park, little did I know the muscles I would need to send that mussel box off! So happy you have her! Don

Now that I have mine....

Hi,

Just wanted to extend my congrats, on your new Radarrange. I too have gotten one recently, and find that it's by far the best Microwave I've ever had, and refuse now to ever look at another one. Nothing compares to it, and nothing ever will.

I know about the solid cachunk, kinda like an old car door. MY glass tray is in perfects shape, and in fact, becasue mine was NIB, but stored for many years in a freinds basement, I thought sure 'nuff, it would be broken because of the hot and cold temp. changes that happen in most Michigan basements. But alas, everything lookes a s new as it did in 1984.

I have no instruction manual to it, but don't really feel that I need one. It's fairly simple to use, and after tinkering with it a day or two, figured out how to reset the cooklevel, and programme the clock, and oher fancy stuff that the thig can do.

Glad to see anothe rone saved from extinction.

BTW We just got three all new ones in our store. Radaranges with the chrme bodies, but not NEARLY as feature filled as the home models. I found out that the store paid like $750.00 apice for them...yeesh....that made me shiver at the thought of what I would have paid for one , if I had the funds, and the will to buy one new.

New Microwaves be damned...these are the best..>Period IMHO

She's a beauty!!!

Does this mean our engagement is over???

The Amana cookbook is good, but my favourite microwave cookbook is the (sadly) out of print Mastering Microwave Cookery by Cone and Snyder.

Another good one is MicroWays by Anderson and Hanna.

I LOVE the "thunk" of the door.

Happy Cooking!

Lawrence/Maytagbear

(you still owe me an email, bunky!)

Yaaay!

Glad to see you found one Veg! Now if you could find us one of the commercials that Barbra Hale did!

MW cookbooks

The two books we use most often are Tout Suite a la Microwave and Tout Suite 2 a la microwave by Jean Durkee. These were written in the late 70's with 600 to 675 watt MW's so over the years have adjust times for the more power. Excellent Cajun food recipes.

Lawrence Jilted for Barbara!

Veg:

Barbara is absolutely amazing!! She looks positively "radiant" for her age! ;-)

I'm so sorry that UPS did the "double-dribble" with her. I have had that experience myself. Glad to see that you found a compatible tray though. BTW, what's the wattage on that gal? Does it heat/cook as fast as they say?

Westie2: I also have Tout de Suite a la Microwave. I got it as a wedding present. No - I'm not that ancient; it was the sixth printing. Just think Veg, if you get a copy, you too can prepare Fillet of Flounder with Sauce Meuniere. I'll bring dessert! ;-)

Post pics of what she cooks, will ya!

Barbara told me...

To thank everyone for their wonderful comments. She may be an older gal but boy, she sure can cook!

All the credit for getting her belongs to Don (jetaction) who did all the heavy work. All I did was sit back and relax. (Which really, is the way I like it. I'm such a slug.)

So three cheers for Don!

Frankly, I couldn't believe my luck at stumbling across the exact glass tray she needed. My luck doesn't usually run that way!

Okay, now that she's here, I guess I have to start working on the rest of the appliances. Would give my eyeteeth for a 60's double-oven range. Need a vintage dishwasher, too. I love my Frigidaire front loaders, but I'd trade 'em for a pair of Space Mates any ol' day!

The small appliances are pretty much covered. But that's another thread...

Woohoo

Congrats on the arrival. I'm liking mine so much I'm keeping it right on the counter under my GE on the MW shelf above. I'm a bit cornfused now if you say yours is a model 9T, mines a 9TA but the control panel layout is different.

Re Amana advertising at the time, they were very slow to adapt to the concept of varying power levels when the Japanese models came updating and even boo hooed it in their brochures claiming it wasn't necessary. I wished I still had one of those brochures. Regardless it wasn't much longer that the ever popular Barbara appeared on television touting the versatility of the new Radarange with the Cook Matic Power-Shift lever.

Since I don't the ovens instructions..can someone tell me how you set the machine for Cook 1 then over to Cook 2.. or do you need the probe for that?

WWW.BN.com in the used book section has some manuals but I haven't ordered one yet. I did order the manual for the Ronson Cook'n'Stir which should be arriving any day now, if not today
(Barnes & Noble)

Hey, Pete!
Wanna be even more confused? Mine's actually a 9-TA just like yours! Least, that's what it says on the back. Maybe models for the Canadian market were somewhat different? Does yours have the number buttons arranged like a telephone?

Anyone know how the model numbers work? Cory? The manual I have is for the 10-T, but I think I have more buttons 'n stuff on my 9-TA? Or maybe I'm just full of crap.

Rick, you have the same one I do--is yours a 9-TA?

veg, who's confused
(like that should come as a shock to anyone...)

Like a telephone layout

Per the labels
Model RR-9TA
MFG P73559 3M
750 watts
Manufactured January 1981
ser#51802692

Possibly by your manufacture date they did a mid year change
though it is possible the Cdn models differed in some regards which isn't uncommon. My reasoning why they do it is because they don't always offer the full line up (smaller marketplace) and so tweak what they do offer either adding or subtracting features to create different price points with that smaller lineup.

Well, I didn't write down the date (though I think it's also '81) or the serial number, but mine says
Model RR9TA
MFG P73559-3M
I think the wattage is 1575, but don't quote me. I'll check when I get home--if I can move it!

Maybe one of us got a replacement control panel at some point?

veg, who grows ever more perplexed

A Veggie Tale.....

Veg:

Tsk, tsk, tsk. I'm gonna have to have a talk with your mom about your kitchen etiquette. Manure, indeed. Well, have to admit, that's what the family thinks I'm feeding them sometimes.....

(So did you decide if it is 1575 watts or 750 watts? Geez, at 1575 watts, you could blow up Bellville off the face of the earth!;-)
