Obama's Support on Marriage Issues . . .
Remember too that the pro-Prop. 8 forces had an ugly little sound bite from Obama in which he proclaimed that "marriage is between one man and one woman", or something similar, and they used it as part of a telemarketing effort right before the election. This may explain why so many people voted for both Obama and Prop. 8. As noted there were also letters from Obama against Prop. 8. It appears that Obama either has no idea what he believes or just doesn't care about our rights. I voted for him in spite of this and would do it again, considering the opposition, but he really owes us in the gay community an explanation of whether or not he believes in full civil rights for us. I don't expect that this should take center stage in his first administration, given the problems with the economy and foreign wars, but that doesn't excuse him from being clear and concise on such an important question of civil liberties.

Great post Hydralique. Quite a few voters had one "defining issue" in the last election, whether it was Iraq, or the economy etc. For me the issue was (and still is) support for same-sex marriage. I think it easily separates the men from the boys, and separates visionary and courageous leaders from backward, hypocritical, cowardly followers. The worst examples of this second group in last year's election were Sarah Palin and Ron Paul, although Obama's hypocrisy and disingenuity on this issue were also exposed.
At least Obama, unlike our last president, is not actively pushing for a federal constitutional amendment to bash gay people. So at least in that respect we're making progress. Whether we like it or not, most African-Americans are really, REALLY freaked out by homosexuality, and President Obama isn't immune to his cultural conditioning. But there's no doubt that 20 or 30 or 50 years from now, people like Gavin Newsom will be remembered as visionary heroes, while people like George W. Bush will be seen as embarrassing half-wits.

Obama, so far, has been more for us than against us when it came to actual votes. I disagree that this should wait until his second term, we need to strike now and hard.
But he definitely shouldn't do anything until we have Minnesota onboard and the Supremes know that the incoming justices (and, regretfully, it is not a question of too much longer, given the situation) will be at least as briliant and fair and on the left if not further than those they replace.
Let one conservative go, and that is the end of the Nixon court.
Same for the senate. We have seldom gone this long without some Republican senator getting caught tap-dancing or fornicating or diddling pages. What on earth does Matt Drudge pay good money for?
Just one more seat (two, counting Franken) and we can do to the Republicans precisely what they did to us. They want pure democracy, I say, give it to 'em.

Keven - thanks for posting that. Looks like he is out of Council Bluffs, mostly the reason why I've never heard of him before.
His daughter is so right. My generation, her generation, we really don't care to continue to hold the grudge that our grandfathers and fathers have, finally ending the decades long battle right here in my home state. LOVE IT!
