Any members here use an iPad to access this website?

I just picked an iPad - 3 last Thursday and have been enjoying browsing the World Wide Web with it. Among other things.

Anyone else have an iPad? If so, are there any applications that have proven themselves to be worthy of downloading? New to the world of Apple products and the application store is somewhat overwhelming.

Malcolm

I just got my iPad 3 about 2-3 weeks ago and am loving it. As far as the App Store is concerned, it's smaller in content that the one for, say, the iPod touch or iPhone as not all current apps are configured for the iPad. I am seeing a lot of updates as the various app designers are making them iPad friendly.i use a news reader called Fluent News that's free and pretty good. Some games for sure. I am really still exploring what this things capable of and learn something new each day.

I am a little pissed at Apple as the latest operating system, ios6, eliminated my YouTube and Google Maps apps that the iPad came with and replaced it with Apple Maps which is not quite as refined. It seems that Apple wanted Google to cough up more money and when they refused were not included. I can access YouTube thru the website or thru another app, but the other apps are not as refined as the official one that came with...

Still learnin...

Apps

So far, I have found Flipboard for news reading and an app called Sale Weekly which retrieves weekly sales ads for stores in my zip code. Testing a few others, but searching for the cream of the crop is a daunting task.

Have you signed in to the iCloud yet?

My son has a new iPad, it's wonderful. A great reader and there are many fun apps. We love playing with Star Walk, an astronomy app. He just has the WiFi, no 3G.

No Flash player available so there are some videos and websites that don't run on the iPad but they have been few, so far. Safari does not allow uploading of photos to this and other websites, but the iCabMobile browser does and is actually a good, mobile enhanced browser that is easy to use.

I have a Kindle Fire so the Kindle app is great for syncing my e-books with all the Apple devices - iPod, iPhone, iPad. I bought additional cloud storage, it's nice to have all my photos, documents, etc. available on all the devices. I'm just learning my way around the cloud but I like it so far.

DirecTv Application

After using the Direct TV application for a little while, I find it exceptionally useful in locating movies, sports scores, and scheduling recordings. I much prefer searching the program guide through the app over picking up the remote control.

I highly recommend it!

Maybe it's ios6 but...

Safari is giving me an option to upload a pic or vid which it didn't before I upgraded to ios6. So, I'm gonna try to upload a favorite pic of my sweet Jenny. Lets see...

Wow! It worked!

Picture uploaded from my iPad 3 wifi/3G with Safari and ios6. Before this, the box I clicked to add a picture was grayed out. Cool! If you get a chance, Google Earth is a fantastic app and looks stunning with the retina display.

I've had an iPad for almost a year, and I use it all the time.  Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

1. AppStart for iPad: (free) Lots of information about using/finding apps, tips, etc.

2. Pages, Numbers, Keynote: These are Apple's versions of Word, Excel Spreadsheet, & PowerPoint. I bought the QuickOffice HD app, only to find you can't sort spreadsheets in it. I use Office For Mac on my iMac and MacBook Pro (Word, Excel, etc.) and docs made with those programs can be opened in Pages or Numbers on your iPad. NOTE: The iPad apps for these programs don't offer all the functions of the desktop/laptop programs. The iPad versions are more basic, but I use them quite often despite their limitations.

3. iBooks: a great way to store AW Ephemera documents as PDFs. When you purchase and download an Ephemera document, just touch the screen toward the upper right and a button will pop up that says "Open in iBooks". Touch that button and the doc will be housed in iBooks for future perusals.

4. Pepperplate: An awesome cooking/recipe app.  Allows you to type in your favorite recipes, or go to any of the 30-or-so online cooking sites which support it (allrecipes, foodnetwork, recipe.com, taste of home, and cooking channel are the ones I use the most) and recipes will automatically be copied into Pepperplate just by copying/pasting the URL. You need to sign up at the pepperplate.com website as well as purchasing the app.  The two work in tandem.  I use Pepperplate every single day.

5. Verde:  Helps you figure out how much electricity your appliances are using, and the cost of operating them.

6. AppsGoneFree: You'll receive a list daily of apps that are free for the day.  I've gotten many cool apps this way--free!  The apps that say "iPhone" can also be used with an iPad. A similar app is called AppShopper.

7. ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR Hourly News:  Watch episodes of your favorite programs.  I love listening to NPR's Hourly News. All these apps are free.

8. NOAA Radar and My Radar:  Weather/radar

9. CoffeeTable: Many catalogs for online shopping.  Updates itself regularly.

Have you figured out how to shut off apps?  Someone had to tell me.  I thought they shut off when you closed them, but they don't.  Double click the "home button" and all the icons of active apps will appear at the bottom of the screen.  Press and hold the first one and all the icons will begin to wiggle and a red dot will appear in the upper left corner of each.  Touch the dot and the app will shut off.

Hope you come to love your iPad as much as I do.  Also:  get a keyboard.  You'll hate typing on the screen.  Do an online search and find one you like.  Mine is a Zagg, and the iPad is stored inside it when not in use. There are many options out there.  I also have one of the covers sold for iPads at apple.com.

Keyboard

I did purchase a Bluetooth keyboard at the time I got the pad, but find it to be hit or miss. Seems it just cannot keep up with an average typing speed. I might look for another later on. I find typing on the screen a pleasure since coming from an iPhone.

Malcolm-- I first purchased a wireless Apple keyboard, but found it was inconvenient to haul it and the iPad around.  That's when I bought the Zagg.  Both work flawlessly as far as typing speed goes. It drives me crazy to constantly have to switch between the two onscreen keyboards (one with the alphabet, the other with numbers and things like parentheses and apostrophes).  I use the iPad for writing documents, so a Bluetooth keyboard is a must for me.  If you're only writing a few sentences, then it's no big deal.

You may be tempted to get an Apple TV box, too.  I follow a few web series and watch a lot of YouTube videos, and it's great to be able to see the shows on a TV screen (or on a projection screen, as I do at work). I don't have one at home, yet, as I don't have a digital TV...but I will soon.

Here's a link to a video about the Zagg case/keyboard for iPad 3.

Good thread!

Oooh, haven't upgraded to iOS6 yet, good to know they fixed the picture bug in Safari.

I'll take a look at the Pepperplate, my mother got an iPad before her knee surgery and barely turns on the desktop iMac anymore. We'd also like the AppStart and NOAA radar.

I thought about buying a keyboard but I find using the screen is very quick and easy. Monoprice.com is the place to go for well priced accessories.

Right now I'm a little ticked at apple. When I got my iPad in May I noticed my charger got hot, not warm, to the touch when charging. Called and talked to them and they were going to send me a replacement, but during the process their system crashed and the guy told me to call back since all my info was lost and he could not enter it again at that time. I got busy and did not think about it, and when I call a few weeks ago I was told I was out of my replacement time window and the cost was $29. I told them to forget it, I'd get one much cheaper elsewhere--so much for the vaunted apple care.

I don't know if I'd buy an iPad again, the galaxy note looks very enticing and does more than the iPad for the same or less cost. I think I have my feet firmly planted in the android camp, I wanted to use an apple product since prior to this I had zero experience with that os. I like hacking my system and find doing things to them with the apple os is much more difficult than windows or android. I have an android phone and 7"tablet and the original os is long gone I flash various roms on them all the time. Gives me features and options the original rom never had.

Weather Channel

I find the weather channel application for the iPad to be very impressive. The display on this iPad is remarkable.

Are those rain clouds

Because I don't feel the IPad love in the slightest with the one the hubby bought a few months ago. For the most part it just sits there unused on the coffee table in front of our tv. I played with it when it first came home, sitting on the lazyboy calling up this and other websites and found it too fiddly if that's the right word. The screens way too small requiring constant fingering to flip and stretching out pages or articles. So far the only somewhat useful thing about it for me is being able to scan those codes in magazines and see related videos etc. Now the hubby does use it to follow the live tweets/commentaries when he's watching the news, but that's about it.. me I wouldn't bother.

We have an iPad 2 and I am on it all the time. Its so handy and portable. We have the Wi-fi version and it works fine with our network. I do use a Mac as well and the hubby has the iPhone 4 but he is wanting the new iPhone 5 in a bad way.

Hi, Arbilab!

I feed them a brand called Chicken Soup For the Dog Lover's Soul. No fillers and I feed them less than the regular stuff to get the right nutrition. They were getting Beneful but they really like the new stuff better. Nothing but the best for my pack!

My sister in law got her iPad at the same time and uses a keyboard for school. We both use Apple's magnetic smart case. I use a stylus with mine and find typing much easier. I like using Apple's App Store. They may be a bit more controlling on what goes on there but I (so far..) don't have to worry about malicious software like Android does. Still, I'm tempted to try one.

First, I want to join Drew in promoting the "Chicken Soup" line of pet foods. I fed it to my cats as it tested far better nutritionally than Science Diet and other more well-known brands. It's great stuff; highly recommended.

Back to iPads: My personal iPad has 3G and Wi-Fi. I can use it anywhere there's a phone signal, which is really handy. There are certain brands of smart phones that can be used as a wi-fi hotspot for your iPad or MacBook laptop, but I have a lowly, very un-smart TracPhone. I just don't use a phone much, and I calculated that it costs only about $7 a month to keep the TracPhone current. The plan I'd want with the iPhone 5 (with Verizon as service provider) would cost $90 a month. No thanks, at least for now.

Bose: I have an aging Bose SoundDock in the kitchen and love it. Also have one in the office at work. There's a Bose computer sound system on my iMac at home. Of these smaller products, I was hard-pressed to find better sound. I had always been a "big stereo system" person for the A/V center in the living room, but mine is ancient by new tech standards (from the '90's). When I get a digital hi-def TV I'm going to scrap the old system and will consider a Bose or Yamaha. I'd love to decrease the amount of real estate taken up by speakers. As I age, I appreciate the simplicity of products like Bose. The back of my current A/V system looks like something from NASA in the '60's, LOL.[this post was last edited: 9/23/2012-18:37]

There's one big issue with iPhone5 right there...

The newest one now has a different sized plug in port so if you get one, all your sync cables, docking, Ihome and other things with the 'older' style connector will not work. You CAN get an adapter but it will not help you use everything you had. The same is true (or will be soon) with the next gen iPod touches and iPads...

I mostly use the iPad to check email and use news apps. Very convenient when in bed.

There are apps for Verizon FiOS and Roku. The Roku app allows you to type directly on a keyboard, so it is much faster than selecting each letter with the Roku remote. The FiOS app duplicates the remote, the channel guide, as well as other things. It works through your wifi, so you can control any TV from anywhere in the house. Kinda fun.

One thing I'm wondering about the iPad: is it hard getting used to the screen's gloss? In stores, at least, I've noticed that the reflections are at best irritating...but that's in a store, with store lighting, and no careful placement of the iPad. (Past, of course, locking it down so the iPad doesn't vanish.)

John-- Thanks so much for that video! It's hilarious! I use my iPad for cooking all the time...but not quite in that way, LOL.

I haven't had a problem with glare, either. As with all screens it can get washed-out in bright sunlight, but other than that, no issues.
