When I was growing up, I remember my mom having a few Proctor Silex irons, that had the temp adjustment knob on the side at the front. The first one I seem to remember having a blue cord, the second one a black cord.
I don't believe that style is made anymore. Most of them now have a big temp dial on the base below the handle. Not sure how many of those Proctor Silexes she had, but later she got a Black and Decker Easy Steam in white with mint green buttons.
I can remember my grandmother having a Black and Decker iron (at least I think it was B&D, maybe it was a GE). Anyway it was ivory in color with orange buttons. Those were always classic irons to me, and she had a GE filter flo laundry set in almond, and I thought as a kid that iron matched it well.
My other grandmother had an ivory B&D iron as well, probably still has it.
Lately I've gotten more interested in these irons from that era, I guess since they take me back to then. There was even an Acme refrigerator magnet made in the style of those B&D irons in ivory.
I found out that GE irons changed to B&D in 1986. There is one B&D iron of that era that I found interesting, saw a few YouTube ads of it. It's white and maroon in color and has auto shut off, which was a new thing at that time. It also has a wait and ready light, and beeps when it's up to temp and also if it's left on too long before shutting off. It's also apparently "self cleaning" as far as the steam function.
Apparently B&D irons of that time were made in Singapore. I wonder what their quality is compared to today's ones?
I did buy a Black and Decker Classic Iron a few years ago, haven't gotten to using it though. It looks nearly identical to the old GE ones, though unfortunately not nearly as well made I'm sure.
