For a while Costco was carrying a Rowenta with a remote steam reservoir. It looked like it would resolve problems with sputtering and spurting, as well as last longer between refills.
I've never had a steam iron spring a leak. But I have had them sputter a lot, which is annoying of course. The best steam iron I've used is also a Rowenta, but even it has its moments.
Of course, you could always get serious and get a ship-sized steam boiler and run one of these:
