I recently purchased an N2L Maytag Wringer (J327669P Aug 1958) with a black Bakelite agitator. The machine is in generally good condition except that the head of the agitator is knocked in (I have the pieces) and it won't come off the spline.

I want to know if the black version is rare enough to warrant extra care in getting it off the spline and repairing the damage.

I am very concerned that the agitator would not stay on the spline and was first struck to wedge it in place, and when that failed, it was glued.

I'm going to try to lift it using the puller suggested by Maytag, but I want a feeling on how aggressive I can get.[this post was last edited: 1/6/2013-22:29]

I had the same situation,

Mine was both broken at the top AND stuck when I got mine home. I doubt anyone glued it to the spline to keep it from floating up. Without removal after use and the monthly coating of Vaseline, stuck agitators are a common problem on these. I don't think mine had been properly removed in years!

I don't think you'll be able to get it off without breaking it further. Once I broke mine off it was another 4 days until I got the stuck spline off the shaft.

I went ahead and bought a new turquoise agitator from Phil for $45.00. Those work fine. I've since bought a black use agitator so they are replaceable. I also don't think they'd be any way to glue these back together for any lasting fix.

GOOD LUCK!

Larry
