Is Amana made by Speed Queen?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Yes.

Really they are both made by Alliance which makes a large amount of the commerical laundry machinery. Not a bad company at all. Some of the Products a little ify.. But they do stand behind the equiptment well and keep a good stock of parts for all machines.. Other brands they now own are;
Unimac, Uniwash, Unidryer, Cissell, Huebsch,Speed Queen, At one time did own the Cook Laundry Machinery company too, Aldwash and Aldry were the trade names.

I thought that when Raytheon sold off Amana & Speed Queen Alliance Laundry bought only the Speed Queen brand and the Amana brand went to Maytag.
Could somebody review what happened again, please?

Off The Top Of My Head

Posted the long drawn out story before, when this topic was brought up several months (or weeks)ago, over the same machines IIRC.

Long story short, Alliance got much if not all of the patents and such for Raytheon's commercial and domestic laundry equipment (Amana and Speed Queen), from Raytheon, with a proviso that they stay out of the domestic laundry market for "X" amount of years. Alliance in turn allowed whomever owned Amana (not sure if Maytag got them first from Raytheon), to use certian patents and such under license from those brands. This was how "Amana" was allowed to continue to build the same washing machines built on the "Raytheon" designs. And is also why Maytag began crying foul when Alliance supposedly jumped the gun and re-entered the domestic laundry market.

IIRC, Speed Queen in the United States was mainly Raytheon's commercial laundry line, and Amana models were if not domestic versions, were based in most cases on SQ designs. So when Raytheon sold off it's laundry divisions, Alliance continued to make SQ but only for the commercial market, while Maytag had Amana machines (based on Raytheon's designs/patents), for domestic sales.

Again the whole story is in the group archives.

Huebsch Old Washer

Where is the washer machine? What is the name of the washer machine, is that right about Huebsch? Is that old washer machine? Which is the Huebsch -- extract or non-extract (by spin) and what's the year?

Phamq you are looking at my listing

Hello there, it is Jaytag. Yes this is my listing. Made under contract for Amana by Speed Queen.

Hi Jaytag:

I guess you sold them since the posting is deleted. It's probably a good deal so it is gone fast.

Huebsch Washer

Yes, the machine still runs well and is used now for mops. It does not extract and is semi automatic. The timer holds the machine in wash mode until it times out then the drain opens up for 1 min and the machine signals for the next operation of the formula. It is a 50lb machine have a 100 lb Milnor beside it. The same year model both 1955. Huebsch quit making washers in 1958 Milnor quit making straight washers in 1965 . American Laundry Machinery and several other mfgs. made unloading washers on into the late 70s That were wash only machines. There are many many still used today and always a lot of the machines for sale at any one time.

Sudsman i remember these "Wash Wheels" from summer jobs at hotels. Talk about lift and drop wash action, lot of water and suds and splashing. The Ladies always gave the timer an extra 10 min. at the end, surprising how much water was removed by the extra tumbling, they were not stupid, their next task was to haul them out of the wheel, and onto a stainless steel tray that led to a huge extractor. It was hard work, so i can see why they went to the machines with a spin. alr2903

Before Amana went to Maytag, it went to Goodman Industries for a brief period. There was a brief period when there was some sort of strike at GE manufacturing so they sourced some machines from Amana and you would occasionally see the "Goodman" Amanas badged as GE. Didn't last long, though. While the Goodman machines may have used Raytheon parts and some of the design, there were some significant differences. Main tub seals on those were a real problem. In fact, by default I had one of the first available Goodman built Amana sets. Picked out the Raytheon built models from the floor but that wasn't what arrived - apparently the warehouse only had the newer models.

The Goodman built washer only lasted 3 years and it was determined it cost too much to repair. Still have the dryer though, going on 9 years.

Yes, angus i remember appnut posted of your plight similar to mine. Even back then it was enough money to make One want to pitch it through CC's window, ahhh maybe karhma got CC :-)

A friend of mine (the one who has Kenmore pushbutton) has a Whirlpool washer and a Amana dryer. If you glance at them quickly, the dryer looks very Whirlpoolish, same slanted control panel. I thought maybe Whirpool made Amana.

the goodman made amanas were called "perfect balace",you can tell them by the plain white control panel and stainless decal, instead of the control panel with the little green specks like in the photo.the machine in the photo has the bigger opening lid so it would have the newer grey tub ring insted of the older white one.speed queen has kept this design of the lid and tub ring only now it is white.

Any more pictures??

Have any some more of the photos for the washer machines and any some machines at American Laundry?

Peter (kenmorepeter01) ;-)
