I've been using my Maytag 806 a lot this week, and I think clothes are cleaner and brighter. My roommate says he can't tell the difference. I noticed more with whites and sheets.

So, have I lost my one remaining marble or are they really cleaner?

Poiwer Fn agitator

The flexible fins in the Maytags were one of many features on those machines that really made a difference in getting clothes clean. Yes they do cost more to run and do fewer pieces per gallon than do the front loaders but their turnover of clothes in the agitation along with their powerful spray rinse during the first spin and their long main rinse makes a hell of a difference.I sometimes let mine wash for 5 minutes then add Chlorox Splashless chlorine bleach in hot water while doing my whites.I stop it and let them soak a few hours then let it finish.Wow,I feel like I need to put on my sunglasses! Maybe all of us need to sign a petition to force Whirlpool to improve and reintroduce the Maytags.Speed Queen is the only top loader that comes anywhere near the Maytags in top loaders that get clotheseally clean without damageing them like some other brands.

It is true and reality if we BELIEVE it to be so.

Modern medicine is now learning the true power of the mind..............

maybe you should post pictures of both machines you are using and a video of both washers doing a full load your 806 and your other washer and this is just my opinion but if you think your clothe are cleaner in your maytag 806 it must be because the washer basket is full of water and turn with an agitator.

My other washer is a Frigidaire Gallery FL'er. I'm still use the Sear's detergent and when I do whites I wait five minutes, and add 1/2 cup of bleach. If they are really dirty I will let them soak for about 10 minutes or so. Next time I wash a load in the Maytag I will make a video with my digital camera. Don't know if I can do the whole cycle or not, but I will at least do the wash cycle.

The bleach dispenser in these IIRC goes into the first rinse, which is not a bad thing.

I have been known to add three more rinses after a "normal cycle" load of whites.

When not using bleach I normally put a cheap, watery (not waxy, thick) softener in the bleach dispenser because I LIKE that it goes into the FIRST rinse. Gives the machine a chance to get rid of the chemical in subsequent rinses.

Kenmore

Ive used both the Kenmore frogeye cleans better than a Maytag, but clothes last longer in the tag.I use tide and my socks and towels come out spotless no additives like softeners etc.Bobby

That's interesting that the bleach is dispensed in the rinse and not the wash. I can't believe how dirty the water is in some of the loads I've washed in the Maytag.

The 806 is the first Maytag I've ever owned. I always swore by Whirlpool. I have used Maytags laundromats, but that was years ago.

Sometimes the color of the water is due to fading of darks, which is exacerbated by phosphates, IMHO.

I have taken to using phosphates only in whites or perhaps a tiny quantity in darks that need it!

My Sears detergent is extremely effective and very low-sudsing. I'm not sure I'd be convinced a front-loader is effective with higher suding detergents.

Maytag???

I have never understood the allure of a maytag,I grew up with Frigidaires, my aunt had a Maytag, and I remember well watching it, it was a 67 model 606, compared to our 69 Frigidaire custom deluxe, the maytag was anemic to say the least, they seem to do ok, but not for big loads and certainly not filthy work clothes, I have used a 806 for about a year so I know firsthand...now im using a belt drive whirlpool, and it is far superior in washing ability...the Maytags have ..as I see it ..1 edge on everything else, they have fewer parts, so they last forever...if you REALLY want to get nasty clothes clean..get a NORGE!!!

Hans, I'm wondering if your Maytag has gummed-up tranny oil or issues with the motor carriage/trolley. Properly working, a Maytag has a bretty brisk stroke without being like today's 90* angle "ShredMores"

I did like my Mom's Norge for washing ability, but alas hers barely lasted 8+/- years until tranny oil made its way into the washtub. Of course that had NOTHING to do with me holding the washbasket stationary [after the huge/loud "CLUNK" of the brake solenoid to emulate a neutral drain.... *LOL* (eyes roll).

It Was True for Me:

When I went from a late-1980s DD Whirly to an A108 'Tag (a machine about 10 years older than the one it replaced), the jump in cleanliness and brightness was very noticeable. No changes in water or laundry products, just the machine.

Big difference. Biiiig difference.

Maytag !!!

I've had a Frigidare 1-18, a GE Filter Flo, a belt-drive Whirlpool, I've used front-loaders in the laundromat, but nothing gets my filthy greasy clothes cleaner than my Maytag A606. It washes and rinses like nothing else I've ever used.

To all the people that keep posting that the Maytag's action is anemic, I bet you're simply overloading it. It may not hold as much as a GE, but it uses a heck of a lot less water.

The 1-18 came close, but the tangling and maintenance issues make it a poorer choice for a "daily driver".

It seems to me that the older Maytag top-loaders in the laundromat here run slower, perhaps the local guy here changed the motor pully to make them last longer.

Yep....

Never had a problem getting the dirtiest, greasiest clothes clean in the 'tag. It's all about proper loading/water levels.

I even get excellent results using eco soap formulas.

I knew id catch #$%^

I guess im the only one who just does not like a tag...Ill stick to my whirlpool...it handles a lot bigger loads and to me washes a lot better...but nothing washes as good as a Norge...hard on clothes but washes good. Oh I mean a real Whirlpool, not one of those direct drive monstrosities!

I had two Whirlpool belt drives first one was in the early 70's my mother's first automatic washer. The second was from around 83 or 84. Both were FANTASTIC washers. I'm keeping my open at three used appliance stores for a Whirlpool belt drive.

Videos

I made a video of most of the wash cycle and a short bit of the rinse cycle then the camera ran of memory. I'm in the process of uploading them to YouTube. I will post a link when there are finished.
