In the spirit of art for art's sake, a local artisan has turned his home into a mad, mad, mad, mad, dizzying world of tile, tile everywhere.   He's like the Sarah Winchester of tile.  I've seen some of his work before, as a ceramicist friend and neighbor has had him do tile work for her, and she also has some of his ceramic and pipe cleaner pieces indoors and out.

It's not for everybody, and very little of his ceramic or pipe cleaner work appeals to me, but you can't help but appreciate the time and effort that went into everything he produces.  I do feel sorry for his house, and I hope it has been structurally reinforced.

I'm finally going with that same friend tomorrow to visit Ted and see his place in person.  I'm bracing for overload.

Great High School

It showed My High School. It wasn't a alternative school, he was in a alternative program. We always referred to it as the hippie class, as the people looked pretty much out there. I don"t know him, but it looks as though he might have been there after i graduated. I graduated in 1974.

Well, it's a lot more impressive in person.  The intricacy is beyond anything I'd have the patience for.  I said so, and Ted advised "Oh yeah, you have to zone out."  I couldn't agree more.

I was advised that the tile floor in the laundry room was designed with tiles at the entry that are sort of faded and drab, progressing to the tiles at the other end, which are the same shade but brighter, to suggest the results of the laundering process.   I didn't bring a camera, but that was some of his early and less interesting work, and the machines were a boring '90s Kenmore pair.

Now his latest thing is to integrate the pipe cleaners with ceramics.   I didn't completely understand the process, but the wire in the cleaners apparently provides structure for thin clay pieces that would otherwise collapse.  They get glazed with the rest of the piece but still retain their pipe cleaner look.

I just do not have the vision to produce stuff like that.  One of his pipe cleaner wall hangings was inspired by an ad for some sort of textile product in the NY Times (the old yellowed ad is tacked on the wall).  Clearly, art -- at least his version of it -- is always on his mind.
