I was watching some vintage clips of Gimme A Break where Nell gets roped into selling vacuum cleaners by her friend the dippy Angie. She cons Nell into selling the "Amaze-O-Vac" which puts the plot into making a parody (Loosely) on the old Kirby salesman conventions where they literally "suck" a new prospect into hawking their machine.

With of course the promise of riches beyond their dreams. Nell tries to sell them with hilarity ensuing... You'll get the rest as you watch the clips.

The question for the vacuum guys is....?

During this skit so to speak, you see a man playing the organ during the vacuum cleaner "convention", and it looks VERY much like Mr. Kann. In fact if it is him, he even has a small speeaking part.

Anyone care to answer if it's him or not? And if it is, did anyone know about this appearance before??? If you look closely at 7:11 to 7:14 you get a great face shot. I'll be darned if it isn't him....

Thanks David,

I honestly was hoping that I wasn't crazy. And considering I was never fortunate enough to meet him in person, I had to ask the crowd what their consensus was.

By the way I still have the Sunbeam Upright you gave me at Toms house. It's still one of my faves. Thanks for the reply and hope you are well..

How did you come across it?

Hi Fred,

I just typed in "vacuum sitcom", and these popped up. At first I wasnt gonna watch it becasue Im not really a Nell Carter fan ( I know shoot me Im a ass), but it looked interesting. And there he was..

I was like 90% sure that it was him, I just wanted confirmation from those who know him that it WAs him....

Thanks again....

And He Played a Mean Theatre Pipe Organ

Stan, who died on September 29, 2008, played the Mighty WurliTzer Theatre Pipe organ for 20 years at the St. Louis Fox Theatre, from 1950-1970, when he moved to LA. He returned to St. Louis in 1998, where he remained up until the end. When I first heard the name associated with the theatre organ, I couldn't believe it was one and the same - but it indeed was. His talent was not merely confined to vacuum cleaners and comedy...

Glad you are enjoying the Sunbeam. I still remember tricking you by hiding the lens in the bag!

I only met Stan once, and he was very very kind in allowing me, a total stranger, into his house to paw allover his vacuums. Of course I went straight to the Hoover 972.

Not a fan of Nell Carter?? Neither am I, but her version of the season three GAB theme is fabulous.

Smooch!
