get a life, you have to much time on your hands.

You do not live in reality.

Tell us here on this website what you do to put food on the family table everyday.

Most of us here work real jobs and have to labor to make ends meet.

What do you do for a living?

Let's lay off Mark

Look, I don't think there is one single solitary political issue on which Mark and I see eye to eye.
Mark has never once been nasty towards me. Never sent me a hate-filled email. Never threatened to turn me in to the FBI for daring to have non-christianist views.
I have experienced all those things here from some of those who most blatantly label themselves 'patriotic, Christian Americans'.
For those of us whose decisions are based on rational thought, it is impossible to understand how anyone can support the republicans as they have become. But for those whose decisions are based on the assumption that anyone who claims to be a fundamentalist Christian is telling the truth, our logic and and our reasons must seem incomprehensible.

You are

a diplomat of sorts Keven,

I am not. As you well know.

Have you looked well ahead Keven to what America is headed for?

The "Americo" is in print in the American mints and ready for release. In Denver. The new form of currency is in place. It will face off the "Euro" dollar.

The constitution and bill of rights are footnotes in American history.

The republicans have put the markers in place.

Let's not read too much into this . . .

The time immediately after the September 11 attacks was a difficult time for all Americans, being the first time this country had been seriously attacked within its boundaries since WWII. Everyone tried to do their best but there were no precedents as to how to act. While I disagree with newspeople being asked to not wear their lapel pins it's silly to make a big issue out of this - it trivializes the much greater problems at hand.

Hello ding ding!

Did anyone bother to read the link?

Why in the hell would anyone tell a USA network not to wear red , white and blue? Ratings? Who's damn side are they on anyhow? What a bunch of shit! That's past ass kissing! That's well... bullshit! After all they do live here.

Fire them all! Or better yet... Let the CEO go live with Bin Laden, live in a cave and ride a camel!

Have to Speak Up Here:

I don't usually do this, but I'm going to speak to this issue as a media person (writer/editor), formerly partnered to someone in TV (my late partner was with CNN).

There was a time when ABC would not have sent out such a memo, because it once would not have had to - there was a time when journalists subscribed to the dictum of absolute impartiality. To wear a flag pin or engage in any other sort of nationalist display on an international story was considered a breach of that impartiality. Time was, anyone reporting on TV wore a plain blue suit and a carefully neutral facial expression, because the news was supposed to be the facts - nothing less, and nothing more.

H.V. Kaltenborn didn't wear flag pins. Edward Murrow didn't wear flag pins. Neither did Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. Walter Cronkite didn't. There was a time when such conduct would have been in the poorest possible taste, and a breach of professional ethics. You did not repeat did not appear to take any side whatsoever when reporting, by look, word or deed.

Today, we don't have journalists much on TV any more; what we have are newsreaders. They often grimace when reading a story about something distasteful, or they stress words in ways that let you know they don't approve of such "goings-on" (we have a very popular TV news anchor here in Atlanta who is the all-time tops in this department; her dramatic line readings would be a hoot if they weren't so unprofessional).

A lot of people today are too young to remember when a higher standard applied, and they think it's okay to be partial when employed as a reporter. That happens a lot nowadays, but it's never okay. The minute a reporter betrays any personal feelings whatever about a story, his word on the facts is somewhat suspect. What did he leave out that was unfavourable to the point he wanted to make? What did he slant? What did he stress?

There is a place in journalism for flag-waving, opinions, and even jingoism. It is called the editorial page, or just an editorial on TV or radio. Traditionally, editorialising has been supposed to be clearly labelled as such; you knew you were reading (or watching or hearing) opinion, and you could agree or disagree as you chose. Nowadays, you can't even be sure a "news" piece is actually news; many stations of one large chain run pieces that are carefully crafted to advance the owners' political agenda. To today's viewers, they look like news stories, but they aren't.

To put personal feelings of any kind - emotional, political, or religious - into news content is a practise that used to be held in severe contempt, and I long for the time that standard will prevail once more.

Oldhouseman~

Why do you find it necessary to attack other members just because their opinions don't jive with yours? Your snide, condescending, comments towards Mark are out of line and you know it.

Mark is a well respected, long standing, member of this club and has many friends here at AW.org. He doesn't owe you or anyone else an explanation as to what he does with his time OR what he does for a living. Who are you to demand it?
You are a relatively new member here at AW.org, and you are not doing much to endear yourself to other club members.

I am glad Mark posted this link. I agree with Beth Ann. They should all go live in a cave with Bin Laden.

Utterly disgraceful!

I was not going to post in this thread,

but....

I am in complete agreement with Sandy about what is and what is not professional conduct from journalists/tv newsreaders, and the like.

I have stopped watching tv "news," and feel calmer and saner for it. I get the news from newspapers, NPR, and the internet.

To go back to ABC's decision, it is important to remember that an outward display of American icons may have imperiled their overseas staff. There HAVE been kidnappings of American news crews.

Lawrence/Maytagbear

I agree 100% with Sandy. There is zero professional journalism on TV news anymore and all it takes is surfing onto Fox News for a minute or so (MSNBC's "Countdown" is not a newscast, all you Fox fans) to understand that there is apparently no such thing as impartiality in reporting the news anymore either.

As soon as my partner and I both got home from work on 9/11/01, we put our flag out. Within a couple of days, flags were out everywhere. That was a demonstration of solidarity by the public, which was the correct arena for it. The tube news didn't used to be, and it shouldn't be now.

Alas, we had to take our flag down once continuing to display it began to translate into support for the Bush agenda. Which I think is where this thread is rooted and is the reason why Mark posted it and Greg is upset with it.

Mark's having fun lighting up the board, but if this keeps up that noun becomes a verb. We can't all be going at it here for the next two months. The TV ad campaigns are for sure going to put us on overload as it is, but I hope nobody gets so turned off that they don't vote at all.

Ralph

Actually,

Greg, I have given quite a bit of thought to the question of just exactly where the christianists are taking the US.
Down the road to a theocratic, fascist nightmare is the answer I keep coming up with.
Since my parents are Americans and the man I love is, too, I worry quite a bit about the things I see happening and the parallels to Germany shortly before the Nazis took over.

I was teaching when 9/11 was reported. The German chancellor and parliament declared unlimited support of our NATO partners, my students were all appalled. As was I.
I donated one month's salary, which my students matched, to an emergency fund to aid the rescue workers and their families.
All of this I mention, lest there be any doubt as to my feelings on this horrid attack. I've said elsewhere (and got my ass chewed out for it by the PC police around here) what I think of the Islamic culture and religion. Nothing good, in case someone has forgotten.
All this said, I still do not feel comfortable with journalists taking sides when reporting. Editorial comments, yes. When clearly identified as such.
It's like this.
When I registered voters back in the 1970's here in Colorado, I never, ever - not even once - wore anything, said anything or had anything on my table, car or even on the pens which could suggest to a potential voter that I was a democrat. Nothing. Zip. Nada.
I registered republicans at a ratio higher than 9 to 1.
Of the over 1,000 folks I registered, not one single registration was erroneous. None got lost, none were 'disappeared'.
Now, is there anyone on this board who thinks for even one second that I am pro-republican?
If I can stomach registering republicans with a smile on me face, then I do feel I can expect journalism from our media.

Personally, I disagree with Mark on just about every important issue. But having suffered the attacks of the christianists around here, their hate mail, their threats to report me to the FBI, etc. I have to say, as long as Robert permits us to make comments in the sandbox, well, then - comment away Mark.
We can't attack Mark's side of the aisle for trying to silence us and then behave in the same despicable manner.

In a perfect world the media would just provide us with the facts and stick to it. I find it interesting, for instance, how they seem to be afraid to tear apart Palin, yet they ripped Hillary apart.

They clearly shirked their responsibilities to correctly advise "We the People" about what the Bush administration was doing as well.

IMO whether or not a media spokesperson does or does not wear a lapel pin isn't important. What I think IS important is that the media provide "We the People" with factual imformation.

"We the People" need to be able to formulate opinions based on factual information. THAT is what I consider the "patriotic" duty of the media.
Too bad we are still not getting it.

Hannity has been saying for a few weeks now that the media in this country is dead because it is too biased either way. CNN had Hillary as their golden girl; MSNBC is Obama 24/7. Fox NEWS ONLY tried to be more objective, but they still lean. But no one is objective, every one has an opinion and an a$$(*).

9/11 was an insane time here in NYC. I know a lot of people who were having a hard time dealing with their emotions. If the nation needed more opinion and panic and sorrow, we could look to each other. That wasn't the job of the media.

It was comforting to know that ABC felt they were just here to tell us the facts as they were known, and to keep us from jumping to conclusions. I kinda like my news with no flavor to it, no opinion in it. Let me form my own opinion, just give me the facts.

I remember years ago when I was in school and we studied journalism, and the teacher had pointed to the Hindenburg disaster as a case where the journalist had done a bad job, because he had let his emotion take over and overwhelm him. I'd never thought about it before, but it made sense to me, and it still does.

Mr. Oldhouseman,

At present time I am retired. This is what I did before I retired:
When in Jr. High school, I babysat and cleaned peoples houses to make money, so that my parents could make ends meet. Mom and Dad did NOT want me to work, but I was young and wanted to help out.
Graduated from FSU in 1978.
Worked while in school to pay tuition, books, and living expenses. Didn't qualify for any assistance as my mother and dad worked. When I graduated couldn't get a job as there were no openings, so I went to France and got my Grande Diplome from the Cordon Bleu. When I came back a year later, got a job teaching in Pinellas County Florida.
Had a piano studio of 20 adults and children.
Sang with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony for two years while trying to teach school and repay loans.
Taught K-5 for 7 years.
Sang on PTL with Jim and Tammy When that didn't work out....back to teaching....
Taught the Gifted children ages K thru 18 for 2 years.
Taught the Severely Emotionally Disturbed for two years.
Bought fast food franchise and ended up with 38 of them.
Went to Saint Petersburg college and became a LFD.
Helped found and fund the Tampa AIDS project.
Also bought and ran a Travel Agency. Sold it at a profit.
Built three funeral homes and sold them for a profit.
Owned and operated a meat company to supply the fast food rest. which I sold at a profit. Sold everything in 1997 and haven't felt the need to work since. The days of getting up at 4am and not getting to bed until midnight or so are over for me.
For the past 5 years, I've been building my home in Wytheville, Va. Took a home built in 1925 and have restored and built on to it.
So as you can see, I DO have a life. When this project is finished, I'll most likely get into another business of some sort, since I can't stay quiet or still for very long. This list is by no way all that I have done. I also was one of the founders of the Friends of Strays in Saint Petersburg, Florida. We took the animals that other agencies were going to exterminate because of lack of space or money on their part and rescued them and found homes and medical care. I'm very sorry if my post offended you, but as an AMERICAN (Republican aside), I thought it pretty lame on the side of the network, as there are LOTS of men AND women fighting right now for the network's RIGHT to air the CRAP that they do. I'm also very sorry that you're so bitter. Perhaps YOU should get a life. Mark

You left out

that you can't stand for other people to have differing opinions. It's your view or none. Sainthood must be difficult when you can't make others agree with you.

Greg, considering the impressive financial successes that Mark has achieved, there should be little doubt that he would be 100% behind the republican platform of keeping the well off well off and letting the effects of their gains trickle down to the less fortunate, even though Jesus, the world's original hippie, would seriously reprimand such practices.

The problem with this theory is that, much like the mighty Colorado River which carved one of this planet's greatest natural wonders, so much is drawn off of it for personal/corporate gain that by the time it reaches Mexico it's just a trickle in the sand that anyone could leap across. The same goes for the windfalls that the republicans provide the wealthy in this nation. None of their benefits ever make it down the chain to those who are truly in need. There are locks preventing the rising tide from lifting all boats as the republicans always claim.

Mark and Greg, I know that both of you are good people and fine gentlemen, just with differing opinions about what is right for our country and Greg, you know I share your views. I hope the two of you can agree to disagree on the issues that you both feel so passionately about and derail the express route to a contentious relationship here on AW. Like I stated above, this political stuff is going to get old real quick now that the conventions are over and the assault on the public kicks into full swing, and I'm hoping that future posts on the subject will draw yawns instead of keystrokes. AW is too great of a place to stir up the pot and cause friction.

Can't we all just (do our part to) get along?

Ralph

I Can't wait till this election is over!!!
At this point I don't care who wins. I am soooo sick of all the commercials on tv being political. The newspaper is filled daily with it. Now they started with the signs again all over the place. I am not talking 1 or 2 but around 50 60 in a span of less than a mile. It looks disgusting. Please less than 60 days to go, please let me make it through this. LOL
Jon
