I just finished doing the laundry in my 1973 Maytag Master washer. I pulled out the agitator knob and the entire thing came out in my hand, oh wonderful! lol Any words of wisdom that will help me fix this would be much appreciated. Thanks, Gary

oh brother!!!
i don't know much about the mechanical side of the wringer washers but, so i'm just wondering, is there "threading" on the end of the rod, that the knob is connected to??
if so, maybe the rod needs to be screwed back into position or maybe the rod goes into a hole and a nut screws on the end of the rod to keep it in place???
just something i am imagining here. i could be totally wrong with what i'm picturing in my mind??

You mean the knob detached from the shaft, right?
The knob is threaded onto the steel shaft, so after many years of push-pull the plastic threads may have fatigued and the knob popped off. If it won't go back on, you can use the lid handle (if you have an N or a J) as a stopgap until you can order a new one.
I'm pretty sure they're the same part.

No, the knob is ok, the entire shaft like mechanism came loose from under the machine.

Check the cotter pin ...
Hi Gary ... there is supposed to be a cotter pin holding the end of the rod onto the mechanism that engages the agitator. Perhaps it's missing.

Maytag wringer washer
Hi Everyone, I have learned so much from reading your messages, and I hope maybe someone can help me figure out some things about the Maytag Wringer washer that I just purchased for $50. This is what I know.............it is a model E2LP, the motor works, the wringer works but seems to only go in one direction, and I don't know if the pump works. Is the lever on the lower rt. side supposed to make the pump work? I can't seem to be able to make the rollers stay separated and I've read that it is best that they do when not using the washer. Also was wondering if there is a repair manual and if are parts available. My husband is pretty handy if we can get the information. Thanks so much for any help. Susie

Yes, the lever at the bottom of the skirt where the drain hose attaches to the apron on the same side is for the pump. It may take some lube or play with it to get it to move. You will have to have water in it to see if it does work of course. Someone will give you an answer to your wringer questions soon. I hope you get it to work so you can enjoy doing your laundry with it. I use mine as a daily driver and call wash day my therapy day LOL. Good luck!! Stay in touch with the pro's here !!

My family think I'm a little crazy, but i have always loved them since i was a kid and did laundry at my grandmother's summer home. As luck would have it, my husband and I now own an old farmhouse out in the country near here, and I'm looking forward to doing some laundry out there with this old Maytag. I do know the serial number.........it is 118198R When we go back to the farmhouse, I will be able to get some pics.

Welcome to the "wringer club", Susie!
I'm not sure why the wringer rolls would only operate in one direction. If you engage the lever for the reverse direction (pulling the lever forward/towards you), is there any strange sounds, like grinding?
There are a few club members that have access to the serial number/manufacture date info - hopefully they will see this post and reply to you.
Regarding manuals, they are still readily available. I've attached a link to Dave's Repair, in Pennsylvania. Also, they appear periodically on ebay. Just a "heads up" if dealing with Dave - I downloaded the Instruction Manual for models E/J/N, and it appeared to be missing the last page. After repeatedly sending him e-mail messages, I never received a reply, which I thought was very strange.

HI and welcome to all of us who have Maytag wringers. Try this, it may take a couple of times. To separate the rollers, 1. make sure the "Push to release" bar has been pushed. 2. Pull the entire top of the wringer head up. 3. Watch on either side that you haven't pulled it up too much, ( there are 2 pin like affairs, one on each side that lines the roller up. 4. Turn the tension bar clockwise 1/4 of a turn until it clicks and there you have it. The top roll is now up and not touching the bottom roller.
To "set" the wringer for use. 1.While holding the top head up a bit with your fingers, while the big part of your thumb pushes down on the release bar. 2 push the tension lever counterclockwise and lower it. When you have it down, turn the tension bar to tighten the wringer for use. It will take a couple of times for you to get used to the process but works every time. I hope this helps? Gary
