A long tradition in my family, and a chance to spend some extra-good time with my dad, we put up a big batch of bread and butters last weekend.

Because of everything involved, I had to do the video in two parts (UTube won't give me enough time for a single upload).

Part 1 of 2

I remember my mother making B & Bs (and canning tomatoes, beans, peaches, pears, etc.). Yum!!! She also made a pickle we always called Grandma Miller Pickles, because my great grandmother (Violet Miller) made them. Some people called them icicle pickles. 2 weeks to make with multiple skimmings, boilings, etc. But, they were the BEST out-of-the-jar sweet pickles I've ever had!

I might have to try a batch. Never once made 'em!

Great video as always. Glad to see you got your dad involved. This will be the first year I'll be canning on my own, thinking of doing Bread and Butter pickles too, might give your version a try. I'm waiting on my tomatoes, I got a call from the lady who supplies my produce last Friday, she had a bushel for me but I was going out of town for the weekend so now I have to wait my turn.

One of our favorites years ago was end of the garden mix. It was just that-- green tomatoes, cukes, green beans, cauliflower, green beans, hot peppers, carrots green peppers and lots of garlic and dill. It was never processed. The jars were packed and a hot brine was poured over and topped with a table spoon of oil. Ate it for years and no one got ill, but i question the process now. I guess there was enough vinegar in the mix to kill anything and it usually lasted the winter, and we even had some the following year.

Hmm, all this is making me hungry!

My, We're in a Pickle

What's next, will we get in a jam?  I can eat a whole jar of bread and pickles making bread, mayonnaise, tomato and pickle sandwiches.

Bread and butter pickles....I can eat them by the quart!  I use my aunt's recipes for B&B, dill, beet and watermellon pickles.  That's on my canning to-do list, along with tomatoes and some green tomato mince for bars and holiday pies.  First on the list though are two crates of Colorado peaches sitting here which are ready to go!
